A long time ago, there lived a gentle and loving lady named Vira Bai. She was born in the holy city of Benares. After she got married, she went to live with her husband in a small village called Sheghar, which was near Braj, the land of Shri Krishna.
But one day, something very sad happened. A cruel ruler came to their village. He told lies about Vira Bai’s husband and took all their money. With nothing left, her husband sold everything they owned. He gave the money to Vira Bai and told her to go back to her parents’ home in Benares, where she would be safe.
Later, that wicked ruler did another bad thing. He stole from a Brahmin. While walking through the market one day, the Brahmin saw the ruler and, out of anger, struck him. That ruler died. Soon, a kind and honest new ruler came to their village. Vira Bai’s husband sent word for her to return home.
As Vira Bai was on her way back to Sheghar, another sad thing happened. Thieves attacked and stole the box that held all her money. Vira Bai sat down and began to cry. She felt helpless and alone.
But just then, Shri Mahaprabhuji came by. Seeing her tears, he kindly asked what had happened. She told him everything. Shri Mahaprabhuji smiled and gently told her where the thieves had dropped her box. She followed his words and found the box with all the money still inside!
Overjoyed, Vira Bai came back to Shri Mahaprabhuji and offered half of the money to him. She folded her hands and prayed to become his disciple. But Shri Mahaprabhuji said sweetly, “I will come to your home in Sheghar and give you my blessings there. For now, please keep your offering.”
True to his word, Shri Mahaprabhuji visited her home. Vira Bai and her husband welcomed him with love. They did everything they could to serve him and worship Shri Krishna in their home. From that day on, both husband and wife became fully devoted to Shri Krishna.
Time passed, and Vira Bai became pregnant. Soon, she gave birth to a beautiful baby boy. Her whole family was filled with joy and celebrated his birth.
The next morning, Vira Bai noticed something that made her sad. It was already very late in the morning, and no one had yet offered worship to Shri Krishna. This thought made her heart ache. How could the day begin without Shri Krishna’s seva?
Suddenly, Shri Krishna himself appeared before her. He had come just for her. He said, “You should do My seva.”
Vira Bai was surprised. She said softly, “But I have just had a baby. I am not pure right now. How can I do your seva?”
Shri Krishna looked at her with love and said, “I want only you to do My seva. That is enough for Me.”
Hearing this, Vira Bai happily got up, made a simple offering, and served Shri Krishna with all her heart. Then she ate the prasad. Even though it is usually not allowed to do puja right after giving birth, Shri Krishna accepted her love. For true love, even big rules can be left behind.
From that day on, Vira Bai never stopped doing Shri Krishna’s seva, no matter what. Her love was so pure and deep that Shri Krishna was always happy with her.
When love is true and full of faith, Shri Krishna does not look at outside things. He only sees the heart. Vira Bai’s story shows us that loving Shri Krishna with all your heart is the greatest seva of all.
