Krishnadas Meghan offering roasted murmura to Shri Mahaprabhuji |
A long time ago, there lived a kind and gentle soul named Krishnadas Meghan. He listened and learned from his yogi guru and spent his days in deep prayer and meditation. One day, while his guru was meditating, he felt in his heart that Shri Krishna had come to earth, but he did not know where. When he told Krishnadas Meghan about this, Krishnadas Meghan felt a great desire to find the Lord himself.
With his guru’s blessing, Krishnadas Meghan set out on a long journey, traveling far and wide to find Shri Krishna’s true form. After many years, he finally met Shri Mahaprabhuji. As soon as Krishnadas Meghan saw him, he felt a deep love in his heart and knew at once that this was the Lord he had been searching for. He bowed down, became his disciple, and followed Shri Mahaprabhuji everywhere.
One day, while Shri Mahaprabhuji and his followers were walking in the mountains to visit the wise Shri Veda Vyasa, a huge rock came rolling down the hill. Krishnadas Meghan bravely jumped in front of Shri Mahaprabhuji and stopped the boulder with his own hands. Shri Mahaprabhuji was pleased and offered to grant him a wish.
Krishnadas Meghan made three simple wishes. He wished that the teachings of Shri Mahaprabhuji would always stay strong in his heart, that his words would always be pure, and that Shri Mahaprabhuji would visit his old yogi guru and bless him. Shri Mahaprabhuji granted the first two wishes but said he could not visit the yogi guru because only those chosen by Shri Krishna can follow the Path of Grace.
Later, Shri Mahaprabhuji visited Shri Veda Vyasa’s cave to discuss deep spiritual ideas. Krishnadas Meghan waited outside for three days without leaving. When Shri Mahaprabhuji came out, he asked, "Why did you wait so long?" Krishnadas Meghan smiled and said, "I have nowhere else to go but to your feet." Pleased by this, Shri Mahaprabhuji again gave him a wish, and Krishnadas Meghan asked for the same three things. Again, only the first two were granted.
At the edge of the Ganga Sagar river, Shri Mahaprabhuji once thought how nice it would be to have some murmura (puffed rice). Krishnadas Meghan quietly crossed the river, found some murmura, roasted it, and brought it back to his guru. When Shri Mahaprabhuji saw the murmura, he was very happy and offered to grant another wish. Once again, Krishnadas Meghan wished for the same three things, but Shri Mahaprabhuji smiled and said, "Why not ask to see God’s beautiful form?" Krishnadas Meghan only wished for what would keep him true and pure.
One day, with Shri Mahaprabhuji’s permission, Krishnadas Meghan visited his yogi guru. When the yogi asked if Krishnadas Meghan had taken a new teacher, Krishnadas Meghan explained that it was by his guru’s blessings that he had found the Lord. To show the truth, Krishnadas Meghan picked up burning coals in his bare hands and was not burned. Still, the yogi guru did not believe. Krishnadas Meghan felt sad and returned to Shri Mahaprabhuji, where his love and faith grew even stronger.
Sometimes, when Krishnadas Meghan spoke about his experiences with Shri Krishna, people who listened could not remember a single word. Shri Mahaprabhuji laughed and explained that only the pure of heart can truly understand the sweet words of a real devotee.
Once, Krishnadas Meghan asked Shri Mahaprabhuji, "What does Shri Krishna love the most?" Shri Mahaprabhuji answered, "Shri Krishna loves milk treats, but even more, he loves the love and devotion of his followers." Krishnadas Meghan then asked, "What does Shri Krishna not like?" Shri Mahaprabhuji said, "He does not like confusion and fighting, so Vaishnavas should always keep peace."
As time passed, Krishnadas Meghan learned many deep lessons from Shri Mahaprabhuji. He learned that not everyone sees Shri Krishna’s special pastimes because their hearts are not ready. By keeping the company of true devotees, thinking about the great stories of devotion, and serving with love and humility, anyone can come closer to Shri Krishna.
Krishnadas Meghan’s devotion was so deep that when Shri Mahaprabhuji left the world, Krishnadas Meghan could not bear to be away from his guru and soon left his own body, joining his beloved Shri Mahaprabhuji in the Supreme abode.
