The Story of the Birth of Krishna in Mathura

The Story of the Birth of Krishna in Mathura

Long ago, in the city of Mathura, there lived a powerful but cruel king named Kansa. He was afraid of a prophecy that said his sister Devaki’s eighth child would bring an end to his wicked rule. To keep himself safe, Kansa locked Devaki and her gentle husband Vasudeva in a dark prison.

Devaki and Vasudeva loved each other deeply and never lost faith in God, even as they lost six of their children to Kansa’s cruelty. They prayed for courage and mercy, trusting that the Lord would protect them.

One stormy night, as rain poured from the sky, a wondrous light filled the prison cell. Devaki felt a gentle peace in her heart as the Lord Himself was born as her eighth child—a beautiful baby with blue skin and lotus-like eyes. He smiled at His parents, and for a moment, took a divine form with four arms, holding a conch, discus, mace, and lotus flower.

He told Devaki and Vasudeva, “Do not fear. I am Lord Vishnu, and I have come to protect you and the world. Take me to Gokul, and leave me with Nanda and Yashoda. Bring back their baby girl instead.”

As Krishna returned to the form of a tiny, adorable baby, all the guards in the palace fell into a magical sleep, and the heavy prison doors opened by themselves. Vasudeva gently picked up baby Krishna and hurried through the stormy night. When he reached the river Yamuna, the waters parted, and Vasudeva crossed safely, protected by the serpent king Shesha.

At Gokul, Vasudeva left Krishna with Yashoda and took her newborn daughter back to Mathura. By morning, Kansa tried to harm the baby girl, but she slipped from his hands and rose into the sky, appearing as the goddess Yogamaya, warning him that the true child was safe.

Krishna grew up in Gokul, bringing endless joy and wonder to the world—a story that would soon fill all hearts with love.

Moral for Young Vaishnavs:
Even in the darkest times, God protects those who have faith. Trust in the Lord, stay brave, and remember that love and hope can overcome any fear.
