The Story of Gajendra Moksha (The Elephant King’s Rescue)

Long ago, in a beautiful kingdom deep in the forest, there lived a mighty and noble elephant king named Gajendra. Gajendra was strong and wise, loved by all the animals and his elephant family. He ruled over a peaceful herd and always tried to protect his friends and the forest.

One hot day, Gajendra led his herd to a sparkling lake, surrounded by lush greenery and blooming flowers. The elephants splashed, played, and cooled off in the fresh, cool water. Gajendra, happy and relaxed, waded into the deepest part of the lake.

But suddenly, from the muddy water, a huge crocodile grabbed Gajendra’s leg with its sharp jaws! Gajendra tried to shake the crocodile off. He pulled and pulled, trumpeting loudly, and his family tried to help—but the crocodile’s grip only grew tighter. For a thousand years, the struggle went on, and both Gajendra and the crocodile grew tired. No one in the jungle could help the elephant king.

Gajendra was mighty, but even he grew weak and tired. At that moment, he remembered stories from his past life about the Supreme Lord—how He is always ready to protect anyone who calls out in true faith. With tears in his eyes, Gajendra lifted his trunk to the sky and prayed with all his heart:

“O Lord! You are the shelter of the helpless. Please save me! I surrender to You completely!”

As soon as Gajendra called out in pure devotion, Lord Vishnu, shining with golden light and riding on His eagle mount Garuda, rushed to the lake. The Lord carried His mighty discus and looked more beautiful than a thousand suns.

In a flash, Lord Vishnu jumped from Garuda, gently caught Gajendra’s uplifted trunk, and with His discus, He cut the crocodile’s grip, freeing the elephant king. The crocodile was instantly released from its suffering and, by the Lord’s grace, returned to his original form—a Gandharva, a heavenly musician, who had once been cursed to live as a crocodile.

Gajendra bowed low and offered a beautiful lotus flower to the Lord, full of gratitude. Lord Vishnu smiled lovingly and blessed Gajendra, saying, “Because you called out to Me with pure faith, you are now free from all suffering. Come to My abode, where there is no more fear or pain.”

Gajendra, shining with joy, went to the Lord’s spiritual world, and the lake became peaceful once again. All the animals celebrated, and the story of Gajendra’s rescue became a tale of hope for everyone.

Moral for Young Vaishnavs:
No matter how big or small your problem, if you call out to the Lord with a pure and honest heart, He will always come to help you. True faith and surrender bring real peace and happiness.
