Once Upon a Time…

The great war of Mahabharata had ended, and peace returned to the land of Hastinapura. The Pandavas were rebuilding their kingdom with kindness, wisdom, and the loving guidance of Lord Krishna. But not everything was calm, for a wonderful miracle was about to happen—a new prince was soon to be born.

The Miracle of Parikshit’s Birth

Uttara, the young queen and wife of Abhimanyu (Arjuna’s brave son), was expecting a baby. The whole palace waited eagerly for the birth of the little prince. But, at the end of the war, a terrible event took place. Ashwatthama, the son of the great teacher Dronacharya, wanted to harm the Pandava family. He released a dangerous weapon, called the Brahmastra, aiming it at Uttara’s unborn child.

Everyone was terrified, and Uttara cried out to Lord Krishna, “Please protect my baby!” Krishna, who was about to return to Dwaraka, heard her prayer. With His divine power, He shielded the unborn child from harm, entering Uttara’s womb and saving the baby from the fiery weapon.

In time, a beautiful boy was born, safe and healthy. The Pandavas named him Parikshit, meaning “the one who has been tested” or “the one who has been examined,” because he had survived a great trial even before his birth.

The Early Life of Prince Parikshit

Parikshit grew up in a palace filled with wisdom, love, and devotion. The Pandavas, especially his grandfathers Yudhishthira and Arjuna, taught him the lessons of dharma, kindness, and bravery. He listened eagerly to the stories of Lord Krishna and loved to hear the tales of the Lord’s miracles and adventures.

Parikshit was gentle, wise, and curious. He loved meeting sages and hearing about the ancient traditions. From a young age, everyone could see that he had a special glow, as if the blessings of Lord Krishna shone within him.

The Coronation of Parikshit

As the Pandavas grew older, they felt that it was time to step away from worldly life and spend their final years in prayer and meditation. They needed someone wise and noble to guide the kingdom, so they crowned Parikshit as the new king of Hastinapura.

The coronation ceremony was beautiful and grand. Sages, elders, and citizens gathered in the decorated palace, offering prayers and blessings. Parikshit was given the royal crown, and he promised to rule the kingdom with fairness, compassion, and devotion to dharma, just as the Pandavas had done.

Yudhishthira blessed him, saying, “Rule with a kind heart, serve your people well, and always remember the teachings of Lord Krishna.” The people rejoiced, feeling safe and hopeful under their new king.

The Reign of King Parikshit

King Parikshit ruled Hastinapura with wisdom and care. He listened to his people, protected the innocent, and followed the path of truth and righteousness. He treated everyone with respect, from the richest nobles to the poorest farmers.

One day, while traveling through his kingdom, Parikshit saw that the age of Kali (an age when righteousness slowly declines) was beginning. He noticed a cow and a bull being harmed by a wicked man, who symbolized the bad qualities of Kali Yuga. Parikshit bravely protected the cow and bull, showing that goodness must always defend the helpless.

Throughout his life, Parikshit honored the great sages and welcomed them to his palace. He loved hearing stories about Lord Krishna and would often listen to the wise words of learned saints. He was known as a just and noble king, bringing peace and prosperity to his land.

The Legacy of Parikshit

King Parikshit’s reign is remembered as a time of fairness and devotion. He had a loving heart and always tried to do what was right, guided by the lessons of the Pandavas and Lord Krishna. Under his rule, the people of Hastinapura flourished, and the teachings of dharma were kept alive.

In time, Parikshit would become the listener of the Srimad Bhagavatam, as told by the sage Suka, and his story would help spread the glories of Lord Krishna to the world.
