The Universal Form: The Wonder of the Virat Purusha

Once Upon a Time…

After King Parikshit learned he had only seven days left to live, he went to the banks of the holy river Ganga. There, great sages and wise men gathered to help him use his last days well. Among them was the young and wise sage Suka, who began to tell Parikshit the greatest stories of all—the stories of the Lord and the universe.

Parikshit asked Suka, “How did this world come to be? Who created the sun, the moon, the stars, and all the living beings?” Suka smiled and began to describe something very special—the Universal Form of the Lord, known as the Virat Purusha.

The Story of the Virat Purusha

Suka said, “Listen, O King! Long ago, before anything existed, there was only the Supreme Lord. By His wish, the universe began to take shape. The Lord made this world in such a way that we could see His greatness and remember Him in all things.”

“To help everyone understand His power, sages described the Lord in the form of a gigantic, wondrous person called the Virat Purusha—the Universal Person. This form is not a human, but a beautiful way to imagine how the whole universe is actually the body of God.”

Suka continued, “Let me tell you how the Virat Purusha looks:”

  • The highest sky is His head.

  • The sun and moon are His eyes.

  • The clouds are His hair.

  • The mountains are His bones.

  • The rivers flow as the veins in His body.

  • The trees are the hairs on His body.

  • The wind is His breath.

  • Day and night are the blinking of His eyes.

  • All the worlds—earth, sky, and heavens—are parts of His vast body.

  • The demigods are His arms, and all living creatures are His different parts.

  • Dharma, or righteousness, is His heart.

Every part of creation is connected to the Virat Purusha. Just as our own body is made of many parts, yet works as one, the Lord’s Universal Form holds everything together. The Virat Purusha helps us remember that we are never separate from God—everything in the world is His divine play.

Seeing the Lord Everywhere

As Suka described the Universal Form, Parikshit closed his eyes and imagined it. He saw the mighty mountains as the Lord’s bones, the shining sun as His eye, and all the rivers and forests as parts of His body. He realized that every person, animal, bird, and plant was a small piece of the great Virat Purusha.

Suka explained, “When we see the world this way, with every tree, animal, and person as a part of the Lord, we start to treat everything with respect and love. We learn to care for the earth, be kind to all living beings, and remember that God is always with us—in everything and everyone.”

The Universal Form in Other Stories

Suka also reminded Parikshit that Lord Krishna showed this Universal Form to Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra. When Arjuna was worried and afraid, Krishna revealed His divine form, filling the sky with thousands of arms, faces, and shining eyes. Arjuna saw that all the warriors and even the mighty gods were just parts of this one great Being.

The Heart of Devotion

By listening to the story of the Virat Purusha, King Parikshit felt peace in his heart. He understood that all fears and troubles become small when we remember the greatness and kindness of the Lord. The story helped him prepare for his journey, knowing that he was always held in God’s loving embrace.

Moral of the Story

Dear children, the story of the Universal Form reminds us that God is everywhere and in everyone. If we remember this, we will treat all people, animals, and nature with love and respect. The whole world is God’s family. Always be kind, see the divine in all, and know that you are a precious part of the Universal Lord.
