Now a Vaishnav sevak of Shri Gusainji, from Mahavan of the Gaurava Kshatriya area, had once killed a serpent; the sentiment of his Varta is told as follows.
Bhav Prakash (Revealing the Sentiment): These are tamas devotees. In the lila their name is Durga. They appeared from “Madhurekshana.” Therefore they are of that sentiment-form.
He was born there in Mahavan in a Kayastha’s house. That Kayastha used to do all the work of the Hakim of Mahavan. When the boy became about twelve to fourteen years old, from then that Kayastha kept him along with him. He would teach the boy all the work. After some days that Kayastha died. Then the Hakim entrusted all that work to that Kayastha’s son. Once, for some work, he came to Mathuraji. At that time Shri Gusainji Himself was staying in Mathuraji. In Mathuraji a shastrarth with the Mayavadis was going on. In that, Shri Gusainji Himself won. Then, seeing Shri Gusainji’s brilliance and majesty, many divine beings came into His refuge. At that time he too came into your refuge. After that, staying for some days near Shri Gusainji, he came to know all the procedures of the path. Then he made a request to Shri Gusainji and received Bhagavat-seva. He received the signed authorization. After taking the command, he came to his home.
Prasang 1: Daily routine, the serpent, and the teaching
So that Vaishnav, every day as he would get up, in the same way he would rise in the early morning, do bodily duties, brush the teeth, and bathe. After that he would do the seva of Shri Thakurji. He would cook and place the bhog. After that, removing the bhog, he would have the Vaishnavs take mahaprasad. And he would do all the seva with his own hands. And with his mouth he would keep taking Bhagavan’s Name as he went. He would not leave Bhagavan’s Name even for a moment.
Those were the days of the hot season. And no one came to take the Vaishnav prasad then. So he was going to call someone. A serpent was lying on the path; it would not move away. Then he stood there for about two hours. He tried many remedies, but it would not give way. Then the Vaishnav became distressed and said that it is not my fault. Then after that the Vaishnav killed that serpent. Then that serpent’s female mate followed that Vaishnav, saying, “I will certainly eat this Vaishnav completely.” But that Vaishnav would keep taking Bhagavad-Name day and night. Therefore she could not get an opening.
Then one day this Vaishnav began talking with a non-Vaishnav. Then that she-serpent thought in her mind, “Now this is my opening.” So that she-serpent ran and bit that Vaishnav. Then that Vaishnav died. Then other Vaishnavs of the village began to say, “Why should such a Vaishnav have such a death?” Then Shri Gusainji Himself was seated, and all the Vaishnavs were sitting there. Then one Vaishnav made a request to Shri Gusainji: “Maharajadhiraj! That Vaishnav so-and-so was bitten by the she-serpent and has died. He was such a Vaishnav—why should such a death be understood?” Then Shri Gusainji Himself gave the order: “He had enmity from a previous birth.” And Shri Gusainji Himself, giving an example, said, “This serpent-form is Time. So, those Vaishnavs who leave Bhagavan’s Name and speak other talk—this Time eats them.” Thus Shri Gusainji Himself gave this command to the Vaishnavs.
Bhav Prakash (Revealing the Sentiment): In this Varta it is shown that a Vaishnav must not do violence to living beings at all. And one should not keep company with those of another path. One should take Bhagavan’s name day and night. Therefore Time does not create obstruction.
So that Vaishnav was such a grace-receiving Bhagavadiya of Shri Gusainji. Therefore, how far can his Varta be told?
