252 Vaishnav Varta 53 - One Rajput of Mahikatha

Now the sevak of Shri Gusainji, a Rajput Garasiya of Kanthe, tells the sentiment of this account.

Bhav Prakash (Revealing the Sentiment): He is a tamas devotee. In the lila, her name is Kelini. She is in the group of Pulidini. She appeared from “Man-aturi.” Therefore their form is of bhav. And there is one sakhi of “Kelini.” Her name is Rama. She became the wife of that Rajput.

So on the bank of the Mahinadi there was a village; there this Rajput Garasiya was born. That Garasiya used to collect the king’s revenue there. When the son became eighteen years old, then that Garasiya died. After that the king kept him on that work. So he used to collect this revenue.

Prasang 1 - First Meeting and Acceptance

So at one time Shri Gusainji was going to a foreign region. On the way a village came. There he stayed. And this Rajput in that village had to take the king’s remaining revenue, so he used to take it according to the king’s custom. At that time Shri Gusainji was seated in a vehicle. He was traveling. Then to that Rajput there was darshan of Shri Gusainji as the directly manifest complete Purushottam. Then that Rajput came near Shri Gusainji, did a full prostration dandavat, and made a request, that  “Maharajadhiraj! I am a very great offender. I have fallen very much. I take revenue by troubling people. Therefore I make this request. I am your slave. You have shown mercy and given darshan. Now show favor and accept me. I am the servant of servants.”

Then Shri Gusainji gave the command, “You take what is to be taken.” Then Rajput made a request, “Maharajadhiraj! Now how is taking to be done? Now accept me. And show mercy and come to the slave’s village.” Then seeing that Rajput’s very great humility, Shri Gusainji gave that Rajput name and had his petition presented. Then that Rajput did a full prostration dandavat and again made a request, “Maharajadhiraj! Now tell such a method by which the mind may attach here.” Then Shri Gusainji, showing mercy on his head, gave the swarup of Lalji and, with kumkum, stamped the mark of his own two feet and sent cloth. So that Rajput, by your favor, began to do seva properly. Then all the people of his house and village became sevaks. And he told him all the ways of seva, and all the ways of the path. After that Shri Gusainji departed from there. Then that Rajput made many offerings. He came to see him off for one kos beyond the village. And he made this request, “Just as you have given darshan, in the same way, showing mercy, you will give darshan again soon, O Raj!” After that, in a few days Shri Gusainji arrived in Shri Gokul.

Prasang 2 - The Bubble and the Teaching About Love

And one day Shri Gusainji was cleaning his teeth. From among the teeth a bubble of a jowar grain came out. At that time Chacha Harivanshji was standing there. Then Chacha Harivanshji asked Shri Gusainji, “Raj! What is this?” Then Shri Gusainji gave his command, “In such-and-such a country there is a Rajput Vaishnav; he has offered cooked bhog of jowar. This is its bubble.” Then Chacha Harivanshji made a request to Shri Gusainji, “Maharajadhiraj! At what time is this such a thing stuck in the teeth?” Then Shri Gusainji said to Chacha Harivanshji, “Go and see and come.” Then Chacha Harivanshji left Shri Gokul. In a few days he went and reached there.

Then when he went into that village, the Rajput Vaishnav heard, “Shri Gusainji’s greatly favored, great Bhagvadiya Harivanshji has arrived.” Then that Rajput took Harivanshji to his own house. With great honor he lodged him in a good place. Then joining his hands, he stood in front and made a request, “Blessed is my fortune that you have come.” Then Harivanshji asked, “At what time is your Shri Thakurji now?” Then that Rajput said, “Rajbhog has come.” Then Harivanshji asked, “Who does the cooking, and who offers the bhog?” Then that Rajput said, “The wife cooks. She offers the bhog. You come and see. It is offered according to the ways of our path.”

Then Harivanshji went into his Shri Thakurji’s temple. Moving aside the screen, he looked. Then that Rajput also looked. When they looked, Shri Thakurji was eating while hanging down. The chowki was far away. Then that Rajput, wearing all five clothes, was standing. He went into the temple and moved the chowki. Seeing this, Harivanshji remained silent. He did not say anything. After that, the bhog was removed.

Then that Rajput said to Harivanshji, “Take mahaprasad.” Then Harivanshji said, “I take it only after doing it with my own hands, because I did not see proper conduct there. And you did not wash your hands after wearing the clothes. You moved the chowki just like that.” After that he brought food in front of Harivanshji, saying, “All the preparation of the cooking has been done.” Then that Rajput said, “You do the cooking and take mahaprasad; after that we will take it.” Then Harivanshji immediately bathed, cooked, offered bhog, removed the bhog, and took mahaprasad. Then the Rajput husband and wife, both persons, took mahaprasad.

After that Harivanshji asked that Rajput, “In such-and-such month, on such-and-such day, at what time did you offer to Shri Thakurji? And what extra items beyond the daily did you offer?” Then they said, “When we offered the cooked jowar.” Then Chacha Harivanshji, hearing this, stayed silent. After that Harivanshji took leave of that Rajput and left. Then that Rajput had a full prostration dandavat conveyed to Shri Gusainji, and sent an offering—an offering for Shri Govarddhan Nathji to Shri Gusainji. After that he bid farewell to Chacha Harivanshji properly. In a few days he came to Shri Gokul.

Then he went into the sitting assembly near Shri Gusainji. He did darshan and did dandavat. The offering that that Vaishnav Rajput had sent, he handed to the storekeeper. Then that offering of Shri Govarddhan Nathji was placed separately. Then he did dandavat from the side of that Rajput Vaishnav. Then there Shri Gusainji asked Chacha Harivanshji, “Did you see that Rajput?” Then Harivanshji said, “Maharaj! I saw him. But I did not take mahaprasad there. And I did not see any proper conduct. Therefore I did not take it.”

Then Shri Gusainji commanded Harivanshji, “You went to that Vaishnav Rajput’s house to see conduct, and you saw it and came. But did you see anything else? Did you not see his affection and parental tenderness? You saw this conduct. But for us, the Vaishnav’s love and affection, and the humility of the mind—these are to be seen. What is the use of his outward actions?”

Bhav Prakash (Revealing the Sentiment): Here it is shown that in the Pushtimarg the Lord does not look at the creature’s outward actions. Because the Lord becomes bound by affection. Where there is affection, there is no need for outward action. In the Pushtimarg, by the strength of the “prameya,” the Lord Himself saves the soul. Shri Gusainji gives this command in the vignapti; that shloka “Kriyanpurv jiv staduchitakritischapi kiyati bhavan yatsapeksho nijacharanadane bat bhavet” By this, the affection of the Vaishnav’s heart is supreme. Without affection, actions do not bear fruit.

So this Vaishnav should have a sense of “mine-ness” toward Vaishnavs. And there one should see attachment toward Vaishnavs. Here he, wearing clothes, moved the chowki in the temple. But Shri Govarddhan Nathji Himself ate with love. Therefore this conduct was not seen. So earlier the Bhagvadiya has sung.

I have worshipped, O friend, the Lord who responds to inner feelings. Even if someone performs millions of spiritual disciplines, still He does not accept that service. The son of Dhumraketu asked, which path is love. From the male arose the female-bhava, and all customs were reversed. Clothes and ornaments were worn in reverse, carefully holding the inner feeling. Reversed gestures and marks were adopted, and the form became pure. Where love is recognized, there is no rule of Vedic injunction. The women of Braj brought Mohan under their sway, says Sur, O clever and wise one.

So there, action was not seen. Therefore one should not look at the Vaishnav’s outward action. This is the sign of Shri Ji’s grace. So Shri Gusainji explained and said this to Chacha Harivanshji. So that Rajput was such a grace-receiving Bhagvadiya of Shri Gusainji, whom Shri Gusainji praised. Shri Thakurji Himself also showed him experience. Therefore, how far should the account of these be told?
