Tripurdasji was a young boy whose father worked for a king. One day, Tripurdasji and his father traveled with the king to a big city named Agra to meet the emperor. On their way back, the group stopped at a very holy place called Govardhan Hill. This place is very special because Shri Krishna played there long ago.
When Tripurdasji saw the beautiful form of Shri Nathji at Govardhan, he was filled with joy. He stayed there for three whole days, just looking at the Lord. His heart forgot everything else in the world. On the third day, the king wanted to return, but Tripurdasji was too sad to leave. He even got a high fever from the thought of going away. Seeing his deep love for Shri Krishna, his father allowed him to stay for two more months. With happiness, Tripurdasji said goodbye to his father and went back to Shri Nathji.
Not long after, during another battle, the king’s group was attacked, and sadly, Tripurdasji’s father lost his life. When Tripurdasji heard this, he did not cry. Instead, he thought, “Now I belong only to Shri Krishna. I have no other duty but to serve Him.”
Every day, Tripurdasji would visit the temple at Govardhan. Shri Mahaprabhuji noticed the boy’s deep devotion. Gently, he asked, “My child, you have been here for a long time. Don’t you want to go home?”
Tripurdasji answered with great feeling, “I have no one else. My only home is at the feet of Shri Nathji.”
Shri Mahaprabhuji was touched. He lovingly said, “Don’t worry. I will make sure that Shri Nathji stays with you always, no matter where you are.” Tripurdasji smiled and said, “That would be wonderful!”
Shri Mahaprabhuji then gave him special blessings and some sacred dust from Shri Nathji’s feet, called charanamrit. From that moment on, Shri Nathji was always with Tripurdasji—in his dreams, when he was awake, even when he was fast asleep. Tripurdasji went home, but he made a vow: he would never eat or drink anything unless it was first mixed with that charanamrit.
One day, a man whom Tripurdasji worked for became angry because Tripurdasji could not pay a debt. That man put Tripurdasji in jail. But Shri Krishna cannot bear to see His dear devotees suffer. That night, He sent four of His divine helpers to the man’s house. They gave him a firm warning and asked why he had jailed Tripurdasji. The man got very scared and promised to release him. He ran to the jail and begged Tripurdasji to leave right away. Tripurdasji said he would leave in the morning, but the man was so afraid that he insisted he leave immediately!
Each year, Tripurdasji would send a special silk quilt to Shri Nathji as a gift. But one year, he had no money. He sold a small silver inkstand and bought a simple colored cotton cloth. He quietly sent it to the temple and asked the store manager not to tell anyone.
Later, during a festival, Shri Nathji said to Shri Gusainji, “I feel so cold today.” Shri Gusainji brought more quilts and even lit extra heaters, but the Lord still felt cold. Then Shri Gusainji asked if Tripurdasji had sent a quilt this year. The manager told him about the cotton cloth.
At once, Shri Gusainji made a simple shawl from that cloth and wrapped it around Shri Nathji. The Lord smiled and said, “Ah, now I feel warm!” Even though it was not fancy, the love inside that gift made it Shri Nathji’s favorite.
When Tripurdasji heard this, his heart overflowed. He cried tears of love and sang a sweet song from his soul. He knew that Shri Krishna cared more about love than about expensive gifts.
Another time, Tripurdasji could not find his charanamrit. Because of this, he refused to eat or drink. He told the cook not to call him for meals. But while the cook was making food, a beautiful boy appeared. He gave the cook three bags: one with Shri Nathji’s charanamrit, one with Shri Mahaprabhuji’s charanamrit, and one with Shri Nathji’s prasad. The boy told the cook to invite Tripurdasji to eat.
The cook called him twice, but Tripurdasji didn’t come. Only when he heard about the bags did he run in, asking where the boy had gone. The cook didn’t know who it was, but Tripurdasji did. He realized that the boy was none other than Shri Krishna Himself!
Right then, Tripurdasji felt sad. He thought, “My small stubbornness caused the Lord to come Himself and serve me. I must never trouble Him like this again.” From that day, he promised never to cause any difficulty for his Lord.
Tripurdasji lived in the sweet presence of Shri Krishna all the time. His love was deep and simple. Let us always keep that love in our hearts too.
