Long ago, in a town full of grand houses and busy people, there lived a man named Puranamal. His father had been a very rich man, but he never cared much about God. Puranamal was different. Even though he had all the money his father left behind, he still thought deeply about life and truth.
Puranamal lived away from his wife because she was not interested in spiritual things. Every month, he sent her money for her needs. One night, something amazing happened. Shri Nathji, the form of Shri Krishna, appeared in his dream. With a sweet and strong voice, Shri Nathji said, “Build My temple on top of Govardhan Hill.”
When Puranamal woke up, he could not forget the dream. The beautiful image of Shri Nathji stayed in his heart all the time. He left everything behind and went in search of the place he had seen in his dream. After many days, he reached a lovely little town called Gopalpura, also known as Jatipura. The moment he arrived, he felt this was the place from his dream.
Puranamal met the head priest of Shri Nathji’s temple and shared what Shri Nathji had told him. The priest listened kindly and said, “I cannot give permission for such a big task. But Shri Mahaprabhuji is coming here soon. You should speak to him.”
A few days later, Shri Mahaprabhuji arrived in Gopalpura during one of his holy journeys across India. When Puranamal met him, he felt great peace and love. Shri Mahaprabhuji blessed him and gave him spiritual initiation. Then Puranamal told Shri Mahaprabhuji all about his dream and how he was ready to build the temple for Shri Nathji.
Shri Mahaprabhuji agreed. He wanted the temple to look like a simple home, just like the house of Shri Nanda Baba, Shri Krishna’s father. The first architect made drawings with a dome on the roof, but Shri Mahaprabhuji said no. He wanted a flat roof. The architect tried again, but somehow, the dome appeared once more—just like before. Even when Shri Mahaprabhuji stood and watched the drawings being made, the dome still came out in the final picture.
That’s when Shri Mahaprabhuji realized it was Shri Nathji’s wish. The Lord wanted a temple that looked like a temple. He wanted it to be grand so that many people would come, feel devotion, and remember Him.
Before building began, Shri Mahaprabhuji respectfully asked Giriraj Hill, “Will it trouble you if we build a temple on top of you?” Giriraj Hill was very happy and said yes with joy.
Soon the work started. But before it could go very far, all of Puranamal’s money was gone. He had spent all that he inherited from his father. This was Shri Nathji’s way of teaching him something important—the temple must be built with love and effort, not just easy money. Many people offered to help pay for the building, but Shri Mahaprabhuji said no. It had to be done by Puranamal himself.
So, Puranamal went and worked with jewelers for many days. He worked hard and saved a lot of money. When he returned to Gopalpura, he used the money wisely to finish the temple. He also gave many gifts to Shri Nathji—beautiful jewels, clothes, and lots of food.
When the temple was ready, Shri Mahaprabhuji led the grand opening. Everyone was filled with joy and devotion. Shri Mahaprabhuji was pleased with all the love and care Puranamal had shown. He said, “Ask for a blessing.”
Puranamal had only one wish. “I want to apply perfumed sandal paste to Shri Nathji one day,” he said.
Shri Mahaprabhuji smiled and said yes.
One day, after finding the most fragrant sandalwood, Puranamal made the paste with great care. Then, with Shri Mahaprabhuji by his side, he entered Shri Nathji’s holy chamber and gently applied the paste. It was a moment full of love.
Shri Mahaprabhuji then gave Puranamal one of Shri Nathji’s own shawls as a gift. From that moment, Puranamal felt his heart overflow with love for Shri Krishna. He had become truly Krishna conscious.
Puranamal learned a deep truth: even after giving all our money and time, real devotion comes from love. A single moment of pure love for the Lord is greater than a lifetime of work without it.
