Gadadhardas (84 Vaishnav Series – Story 8)

Gadadhardasji offering Mahaprasad to Vaishnavs

Gadadhardasji grew up in a loving family, where everyone respected the old traditions. One day, his wise uncle, who worshipped a Devata, invited him to visit Prayag during a big festival. “Let us go and meet Shrimad Vallabhacharya,” said his uncle. Gadadhardasji was happy to join him.

At the festival, his uncle had many questions. He asked Shri Mahaprabhuji, “Some people worship Shri Krishna, others worship other deities. Who is the Supreme God?”

With a gentle smile, Shri Mahaprabhuji explained, “Just as many kings follow the orders of one great emperor, all gods and goddesses listen to Shri Krishna. He is the original Lord, and everyone else comes from Him.”

Listening to Shri Mahaprabhuji’s sweet words, Gadadhardasji felt peace in his heart. Right away, he asked to become Shri Mahaprabhuji’s disciple. Shri Mahaprabhuji taught him about love and devotion, and showed him how to serve Shri Krishna in every moment.

Shri Mahaprabhuji taught, “If you are not busy with other work, use your time to sing, listen, and think about Shri Krishna. Even if you are busy, always keep your mind on Him and remember His stories.” Gadadhardasji promised that he would spend his life serving Shri Krishna and helping others. He lived simply and used the gifts his religious friends gave him. He gave all his heart to Shri Krishna, living every day with love and devotion.

One day, Gadadhardasji had no money left and nothing to offer to Shri Krishna except water. Still, he offered it with deep love. Shri Krishna decided to test him and see if his faith would remain strong. That night, Gadadhardasji felt sad. He thought, “Today my Lord did not get food. The Vaishnavas also did not eat.” Even though he thought of many tasty dishes in his mind, his heart was worried because he could not serve anyone.

Suddenly, a kind friend came and gave him four rupees. Gadadhardasji quickly bought some milk sweets and offered them to Shri Krishna with all his love. He then called the Vaishnavas to share the prasada. He himself did not eat, but he felt very happy knowing that the Lord and the devotees were satisfied.

The next day, Gadadhardasji used the rest of the money to buy more food, made fresh offerings to Shri Krishna, and again invited the Vaishnavas. During the meal, one Vaishnava said, “Yesterday’s prasada was so delicious! How did you make it?” Gadadhardasji smiled and told him his simple way, then sang a gentle poem to praise Shri Krishna. He always felt small and unworthy but loved all devotees deeply.

Another day, Gadadhardasji invited some Vaishnavas for a meal. Everything was ready except the vegetables. He asked, “Who will bring the vegetables?” A man named Madhodas, who known to have vices, offered to go. He brought fresh spinach, cleaned it, and helped make the offering. Later, everyone enjoyed the meal, and a devotee praised the spinach. Gadadhardasji blessed Madhodas, “Because Shri Krishna ate your offering, you will gain true devotion.” From that day, Madhodas’s heart changed, and he became a sincere devotee.

Once, a trader needed to buy an ox. Some people who were jealous of Gadadhardasji made a joke and sent the trader to him. The trader gave Gadadhardasji money and asked for an ox. Gadadhardasji realized it was a prank, but he accepted the money and said, “Come tomorrow at noon.” He bought food for the Lord, offered everything to Shri Krishna, and invited the Vaishnavas to share the meal. When the trader arrived all the Vaishnavs were enjoying their meal. Gadadhardasji said these are all Krishna's ox's choose the one you want! ox is a representation of Dharma and righteousness. Gadadhardasji shared the true gift of being a Vaishnava: happiness in serving Shri Krishna. The trader understood and wanted to be a real devotee too. Gadadhardasji advised him, “Go to Adel and take initiation from Shri Mahaprabhuji.” The trader listened, and his heart became full of faith.

Even the smallest meeting with a true devotee like Gadadhardasji can bring great blessings. He spent his days writing poems about Shri Krishna, singing His glories, and caring for all Vaishnavas. In his heart, devotion shone brighter than gold.

Poem: Gadadhardasji’s Gentle Heart

Gadadhardasji lived each day,
Serving Shri Krishna in every way.
When he had nothing, he still would pray,
With love in his heart, come what may.

He fed the poor, he fed the wise,
He saw Shri Krishna in every guise.
A single kind word or humble deed,
Can grow true faith from just a seed.

Helping hands and hearts that care,
Bring Shri Krishna everywhere.
Serve with joy, be pure and true,
Shri Krishna’s blessings come to you!
