84 Vaishnav Story 07 Ramdas Saraswat

Once, in a small town, there lived a kind-hearted boy named Ramdasji. From the time he was little, Ramdasji loved to spend time with gentle saints who wandered from place to place, always singing the name of Shri Krishna. One day, Ramdasji and his saintly friend decided to take a long journey together. They walked to the place where the sacred river Ganga meets the wide ocean, called Ganga Sagar.

While they were there, Ramdasji started playing in the soft sand. As he dug with his hands, he felt something smooth and round. To his great surprise, it was a small and beautiful statue of child Shri Krishna! Ramdasji’s heart filled with joy. He ran to show it to his friend, who smiled and said, “How lucky you are, Ramdasji! Shri Krishna Himself has come to you. You must take care of Him every day.”

Ramdasji was so happy, but he also felt a little worried. He had never learned the special ways to serve a Deity. His friend told him, “Go to Shri Mahaprabhuji in Jagannath Puri. He will become your guru and teach you everything.” So Ramdasji quickly went home, called his wife, and together they set off to find Shri Mahaprabhuji.

After traveling for many days, they arrived at a peaceful garden near Jagannath Puri. There, Shri Mahaprabhuji was resting. Without ever meeting Ramdasji before, Shri Mahaprabhuji looked at him kindly and asked, “Ramdasji, how did you find that sweet form of Shri Krishna at Ganga Sagar? Can you show Him to Me?” Ramdasji was amazed that Shri Mahaprabhuji already knew everything. He bowed down with respect and invited Shri Mahaprabhuji to visit his home in Patna.

Shri Mahaprabhuji did visit Ramdasji’s home. He gave both Ramdasji and his wife special teachings and made them his disciples. From that day, Ramdasji worshipped Shri Krishna with great love and care, doing every task as best as he could.

As time passed, Ramdasji’s money began to run out. To earn more, he lent his last coins to some weavers, who returned the money with a little extra. Ramdasji felt pleased. But Shri Krishna, whom he loved so much, appeared in his heart and gently said, “Ramdasji, you are thinking more about the interest from the weavers than about Me.” Realizing this, Ramdasji quickly asked the weavers for only his original money back and let go of all his worries about earning more.

But things were still hard for Ramdasji. He borrowed money from others to keep serving Shri Krishna, but each time someone asked for their money back, Ramdasji felt very sad. Shri Krishna could not bear to see His devotee upset. One day, Shri Krishna took on Ramdasji’s own form, paid back the businessman with extra coins, and even signed Ramdasji’s name. When Ramdasji heard what had happened, he knew that his Lord had helped him.

Ramdasji thought, “I do not want Shri Krishna to work for me. I must find a way to care for myself.” So, Ramdasji became a policeman in the city of Prayaga. One day, dressed in his uniform, Ramdasji visited Shri Mahaprabhuji, who told everyone, “Ramdasji is truly blessed.” When others wondered why, Shri Mahaprabhuji explained, “He works so that he does not trouble Shri Krishna at all. His heart is strong and pure.”

One morning, as Shri Mahaprabhuji walked by his door, he saw a muddy ditch outside. “Why is this ditch still here?” he asked. Ramdasji rushed to fill the hole without even changing out of his work clothes. When Shri Mahaprabhuji saw the ditch was gone and Ramdasji’s clothes were dirty, he smiled and said, “This is real service.” Ramdasji never cared for fame or praise. He did every little job, big or small, with the same happy heart.

After a year, Ramdasji saved up enough and left his job, returning to serve Shri Krishna full time. His wife sometimes wished for a son and once asked if he would marry again. Ramdasji told her gently, “If you wish for a child, love Shri Krishna as Mother Yashoda did. Serve Him with a mother’s love, and your wish will be fulfilled.” His wife followed his advice, and with Shri Krishna’s blessings, her wish came true.

Ramdasji was never interested in money, praise, or worldly things. He only wanted to serve Shri Krishna and make Shri Mahaprabhuji happy. In this way, he won the heart of his Lord, who always watched over him with love.

Poem: The Blessed Heart of Ramdasji

Ramdasji found Shri Krishna one day,
Hidden in the sand where rivers play.
He showed his friend with shining eyes,
A gift from above, a wonderful prize.

To Shri Mahaprabhuji, he went so fast,
He wanted to learn how to serve at last.
He cared for his Lord with loving delight,
Serving Shri Krishna both day and night.

When money ran out, and troubles came by,
Shri Krishna helped, never asking why.
Ramdasji worked, then served again,
His love for the Lord was always the same.

Big jobs or small, he never thought twice,
He did every task without any pride.
His wife wished for a child to hold,
He taught her to love Shri Krishna like gold.

Kindness and faith, and doing your part,
That is the way to a gentle heart.
Serve with love, be honest and true,
Shri Krishna will always care for you!
