Narada’s Instructions to Vyasa and the Secret of His Previous Life

Once Upon a Time…

In the ancient days, after compiling the Vedas and the Mahabharata, the wise sage Vyasa still felt an emptiness in his heart. Even after writing such great scriptures, something troubled him. He sat quietly in his ashram on the banks of the river Saraswati, lost in deep thought.

Suddenly, a radiant figure appeared before him. It was the divine sage Narada, always cheerful and glowing with spiritual joy, carrying his beloved veena. Narada is famous throughout the worlds as a pure devotee of Lord Vishnu, traveling everywhere, singing the Lord’s glories and sharing wisdom.

Vyasa welcomed Narada with great respect and asked, “O revered Narada, even after all my work, I feel restless. I have written the Vedas, the Puranas, and the Mahabharata, but my heart still feels unsatisfied. Please tell me what I am missing.”

Narada smiled kindly. He understood Vyasa’s pain and sat down to give him the most important lesson of his life.

The Wisdom of Narada

Narada gently said, “O Vyasa, you have written so many scriptures about duties, rules, and stories of kings and warriors. But you have not described, with all your heart, the pure glories of Lord Krishna—His loving pastimes, His wonderful qualities, and the power of devotion (bhakti) that brings true happiness.”

He continued, “People will learn so much from your works, but unless you teach them how to love and serve the Lord with a pure heart, their hearts will remain empty—just as you feel now. Only devotion to the Lord can satisfy the soul.”

Vyasa understood. He realized that it was true—he had explained many things, but had not fully revealed the joy of loving Krishna. Inspired by Narada’s advice, Vyasa decided to write the Srimad Bhagavatam, a book dedicated to the sweet stories and glories of the Lord, so everyone could feel the bliss of devotion.

Narada’s Story of His Previous Life

To help Vyasa understand the power of bhakti, Narada shared his own story from a past life.

“Listen, Vyasa,” said Narada. “In my previous birth, I was not a sage. I was just the son of a simple maidservant. My mother and I lived in service to some holy saints, who stayed in our village during the rainy season.”

“These saints were pure devotees of Lord Vishnu. Every day, I served them with love—fetching water, cleaning, and listening to their talks about God. I was just a child, but I felt drawn to their peaceful ways and the sweet stories of the Lord. Sometimes, they would share the leftovers of their food with me. Because of their blessings, my heart became pure.”

“After the rainy season, the saints left. Soon after, my mother passed away, and I was all alone. I wandered into the forest, remembering the teachings and the songs of the devotees. Sitting under a tree, I began to meditate on Lord Vishnu, just as the saints had taught me.”

Narada continued, “I practiced with all my heart. Once, I even had a vision of the Lord, glowing beautifully. The Lord smiled at me and then disappeared, saying, ‘In this lifetime, you will not see Me again, but in your next birth, you will become My eternal servant and always sing My glories.’”

“After some time, my body grew old, and I left the world. In my next life, by the Lord’s grace, I was born as Narada, free to travel everywhere, always singing the Lord’s name and sharing the joy of devotion.”

Vyasa’s Realization

After listening to Narada, Vyasa’s eyes filled with tears—not of sadness, but of joy and gratitude. He understood that the highest knowledge is not just about rituals or stories of kings, but the pure love and service to Lord Krishna.

Vyasa decided to write the Srimad Bhagavatam, filling it with the beautiful stories of Krishna’s childhood, His adventures, and the loving devotion of His devotees. This book would help everyone remember that the sweetest happiness comes from loving the Lord with all one’s heart.

Moral of the Story

Dear children, the story of Narada’s instructions to Vyasa reminds us that real happiness comes from devotion and love for God. By listening to the stories of the Lord, serving the saints, and remembering God with a pure heart, we find true peace and joy—no matter what challenges come our way. Always remember: Bhakti, or loving devotion, is the greatest treasure.
