The Glories of Chanting Krishna’s Name
From Canto 2: Cosmic Manifestation — A Gentle Bedtime Story for Young Vaishnavs
Once Upon a Time…
After listening to the great stories of the Lord’s cosmic form, King Parikshit, sitting on the banks of the river Ganga, asked Sage Suka, “How can ordinary people like us, living busy lives in this world, come close to Lord Krishna and feel His presence?”
Sage Suka smiled. “O King, there is a simple and powerful way to remember Krishna and fill your heart with joy and peace: by chanting His holy names. In this age, there is no greater path to happiness and spiritual growth than chanting the divine name of Krishna again and again.”
Why Krishna’s Name Is So Special
Suka explained, “The name of Krishna is not just a word—it is full of the Lord’s own love, power, and kindness. When we say, sing, or even think of Krishna’s name, our heart becomes pure and our mind becomes calm. It is like a gentle rain that washes away all sorrow and brings a garden of joy to life.”
“Chanting Krishna’s name is so simple that anyone can do it—young or old, rich or poor, happy or sad. You don’t need to know big prayers or rituals. Just call out His name with a sincere heart: Krishna, Govinda, Gopala, Hari, or any of His many sweet names.”
The Story of the Mouse and the Lamp
Suka told a gentle tale to Parikshit:
“In a small temple, a little mouse lived near the altar of Lord Krishna. Every night, the mouse would run about looking for food. One evening, as the lamp before Krishna was about to go out, the mouse jumped up and accidentally made the lamp shine brighter by moving it. The priest saw this and laughed, but Krishna was so pleased by even this tiny act of service that He blessed the mouse with a joyful future life.”
Suka continued, “If the Lord is so loving to a little mouse, imagine how happy He is when someone calls out His name with love, even for just a moment!”
The Power of Chanting Together
Suka also told the king, “When many people chant together, singing Krishna’s names, the whole world becomes filled with happiness. The sound goes far and wide, bringing peace to people’s minds and even to the animals, birds, and trees. It is said that even if you chant by mistake or without understanding, Krishna’s name is so powerful that it still brings blessings.”
King Parikshit’s Realization
King Parikshit listened and felt his heart become light and joyful. He closed his eyes and softly began to chant, “Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare, Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.” He felt all his fears and worries melt away, replaced by a gentle happiness.
Suka smiled. “Chanting Krishna’s name is like holding the hand of the Lord. Whenever you feel sad, afraid, or lost, just say His name, and you will never be alone.”
How Children Can Chant
Dear children, you can chant Krishna’s name anytime—when you wake up, before sleeping, while playing, or whenever you want to feel happy. You can sing, whisper, or even think of Krishna’s name in your heart. You don’t need anything but love and a little time.
Remember, Krishna listens to everyone—He especially loves the simple, loving calls of children!
Moral of the Story
The story of chanting Krishna’s name teaches us that true happiness is always close by. By remembering and chanting the Lord’s name with love, our lives become full of light, hope, and peace. No matter where you are, Krishna’s name will always bring you close to Him.
