The Stories of King Ambarisha

Long ago, in the golden age of kings and sages, there lived a great and gentle ruler named Ambarisha. King Ambarisha was known far and wide for his kindness, devotion, and deep faith in Lord Vishnu. His heart was pure, and he ruled his kingdom with fairness, wisdom, and compassion.

King Ambarisha loved serving the Lord and always remembered Him in everything he did. He used his hands for cleaning the temple, his voice for singing bhajans, his ears for listening to holy stories, his eyes for looking at the Lord’s beautiful form, and his mind for thinking of God’s pastimes. Because of this, Ambarisha was blessed with peace and happiness.

The Great Ekadashi Fast

Every month, Ambarisha observed the holy Ekadashi fast, dedicating the day to prayer, charity, and simple living. He inspired all the people in his kingdom to do the same, teaching them that fasting and remembering the Lord brings purity and joy to the heart.

Once, Ambarisha and his queen performed a special year-long vow, at the end of which they were to break their fast at a sacred river. On the final day, just as Ambarisha was about to end his fast, the powerful sage Durvasa arrived, shining with spiritual power.

Ambarisha greeted Durvasa with respect and offered him delicious food, but Durvasa wanted to first bathe and perform his prayers. Ambarisha waited patiently, but the sacred time to break his fast was almost over. Unsure what to do, he sipped a little water—enough to keep his vow but not enough to disrespect the guest.

When Durvasa returned and realized what had happened, he became angry, thinking Ambarisha had insulted him by eating before his guest. In a fury, Durvasa pulled out a strand of his hair and created a fiery demon to punish the king.

But Ambarisha stood still, calm and humble, with his heart fixed on the Lord. Instantly, Lord Vishnu’s Sudarshana Chakra, the magical spinning disc, appeared and destroyed the fiery demon. The chakra then began to chase Durvasa, who ran all over the universe seeking shelter—even from Lord Brahma and Lord Shiva—but none could protect him from the Lord’s weapon.

Finally, Durvasa rushed back to Ambarisha and fell at his feet, begging for forgiveness. Ambarisha, full of humility and compassion, prayed to the Lord to forgive the sage. The Sudarshana Chakra disappeared, and peace was restored.

Durvasa was amazed by Ambarisha’s patience and devotion, and he blessed the king. From that day on, people everywhere remembered King Ambarisha as the perfect devotee—humble, kind, and always trusting in the Lord’s protection.

Moral for Young Vaishnavs:
Always be humble, patient, and forgiving, even when others misunderstand you. True strength comes from devotion to God and kindness to all.
