The Story of Creation, Manus, and Swayambhuva Manu
From Srimad Bhagavatam Canto 3: The Status Quo — A Gentle Bedtime Story for Young Vaishnavs
Once Upon a Time…
Long ago, before the world as we know it began, Lord Brahma sat upon a golden lotus that rose from the navel of Lord Vishnu. With the Lord’s blessing, Brahma started the work of creation. He first created the basic elements—earth, water, fire, air, and space. Then he created time, the mind, and the senses. With patience and devotion, Brahma shaped the world so that life could flourish.
But Brahma knew he could not do everything alone. He needed wise leaders to take care of the worlds and guide all living beings in the right path. These leaders would be known as Manus.
Who Are the Manus?
In every cycle of creation, there are fourteen Manus, each ruling for a long period called a Manvantara. Each Manu looks after the world, protects dharma (righteousness), and teaches people how to live good lives. The first of these great rulers was named Swayambhuva Manu.
The Story of Swayambhuva Manu
Swayambhuva means “self-born” because Manu was born directly from the mind of Brahma. He was filled with wisdom, kindness, and devotion. His queen, Shatarupa, was equally virtuous and helped him in every way.
Swayambhuva Manu and Shatarupa had two sons, Priyavrata and Uttanapada, and three daughters, Akuti, Devahuti, and Prasuti. Through his children, Manu became the ancestor of many kings, sages, and even some divine beings.
As the first ruler of the world, Swayambhuva Manu guided everyone with fairness and love. He established the rules of right living, protected all creatures, and made sure people remembered the Lord. He listened to wise sages, respected the earth, and performed many acts of charity.
The Earth Is Saved
Once, the earth was in great trouble. In the early days of creation, the earth had sunk beneath the cosmic ocean. Swayambhuva Manu prayed to Lord Vishnu to save her. Answering his prayers, Lord Vishnu appeared in the form of Varaha, the giant divine boar. With His great tusks, Varaha lifted the earth from the ocean and placed her safely back in the sky.
Manu and all the beings rejoiced, singing the Lord’s praises and offering gratitude for His loving protection.
The Importance of Manu’s Rule
Swayambhuva Manu showed everyone that rulers should care for all living beings—humans, animals, plants, and even rivers and mountains. He taught people to live with honesty, kindness, and devotion. Because of Manu’s wise rule, the world flourished with happiness, peace, and spiritual knowledge.
The Manus Throughout Time
After Swayambhuva Manu, many other Manus have ruled the world, each taking care of creation in their own time. They all follow the same path—protecting dharma and guiding everyone towards truth, love, and remembrance of God.
Moral of the Story
Dear children, the story of the Manus and Swayambhuva Manu teaches us that great leaders serve with humility, wisdom, and love for all. We too can care for the world by being honest, kind, and devoted. Just like Manu, let us respect all living beings and protect the earth, remembering that we are all part of God’s beautiful creation.
