The Penance of the Prachetas – A Tale of Devotion and Divine Blessings

A long time ago, there lived ten royal brothers known as the Prachetas. They were the sons of King Prachinabarhi, who was wise and wanted his sons to rule the world with virtue and love. The Prachetas were raised with good values and learned to respect God, elders, and nature.

When the brothers came of age, their father gave them a very important duty. He said, “My dear sons, it is your responsibility to continue our family line and help the world flourish. But before you take on these duties, I want you to please the Supreme Lord through penance and prayer. This will bring blessings upon you and your future family.”

The Prachetas listened to their father’s advice. With humble hearts, they set out toward the west, where they found a beautiful, clear lake filled with gentle lotuses and swans. The air was fragrant, and the atmosphere was peaceful—perfect for meditation.

Standing together on the lakeshore, the Prachetas offered prayers to the Supreme Lord. They then entered the lake and began their penance. Under the water, they sat in deep meditation, chanting the holy names of Lord Vishnu and thinking only of Him. This penance continued for a very long time—ten thousand years! Even though it was difficult, the brothers never gave up, for their hearts were filled with love and faith in God.

Pleased with their devotion, Lord Vishnu Himself appeared before the Prachetas. His form was beautiful, shining with golden light, and His eyes were full of compassion. The brothers opened their eyes and felt overwhelming joy and peace.

Lord Vishnu spoke to them kindly: “My dear Prachetas, I am very pleased with your devotion and your unity as brothers. You did not complain or become afraid, but instead remembered Me with love. Ask for any blessing you wish, and I will grant it.”

The Prachetas bowed before the Lord and said, “O Lord, please bless us so that we may serve You in every life, and let us always remember You. Bless us with wisdom, strength, and the ability to care for the earth and all living beings.”

Lord Vishnu smiled and granted them wonderful boons. He said, “You will marry a noble princess and have a son who will be wise and famous throughout the world. Your family will bring goodness to all. Most importantly, you will always remember Me in your hearts.”

Blessed by the Lord, the Prachetas returned home. They were soon united with the princess Marisha, just as Lord Vishnu had promised. In time, they had a noble son named Daksha, who became a great leader.

The Prachetas ruled with kindness and wisdom, always remembering the Lord’s teachings. Because of their penance and unity, they brought prosperity and happiness to their land and inspired others to live with faith and devotion.

Moral for Young Vaishnavs:
Faith, patience, and working together bring divine blessings. Even when things are difficult, if we stick together and remember the Lord with love, wonderful things will happen. Trust in God’s plan, stay united with your family, and never give up on doing the right thing.
