The Story of Dhruva’s Penance and Meeting Lord Vishnu
From Srimad Bhagavatam Canto 4: The Creation of the Fourth Order — A Gentle Bedtime Story for Young Vaishnavs
Once Upon a Time…
In the kingdom of King Uttanapada, there lived a little boy named Dhruva. Dhruva was gentle, bright, and full of love for his mother, Suniti. He loved listening to stories of Lord Vishnu and dreamed of becoming someone his father would always cherish.
But sometimes, life in the palace was hard for Dhruva. His stepmother, Queen Suruchi, was unkind and would not let him sit on his father’s lap. One day, when Dhruva tried to do so, Suruchi pushed him aside and told him, “Only my son can sit here. If you want the king’s love, you must please Lord Vishnu and be born to me in your next life.”
Dhruva felt deeply hurt and ran to his mother, crying. Suniti hugged him tenderly and said, “My dear son, do not feel sad. If you truly want love and respect, pray to Lord Vishnu. Only He can grant the deepest wishes of our hearts.”
Dhruva’s Brave Decision
Though he was just a five-year-old boy, Dhruva decided to go to the forest to pray and meditate on Lord Vishnu. He wanted to find the Lord and ask for a blessing that no one could ever take away from him—a place where he would always feel loved and protected.
With his mother’s blessings, Dhruva walked deep into the forest. Along the way, the wise sage Narada met him. Narada was surprised to see such a young child traveling alone and asked, “Where are you going, little one?”
Dhruva shared his story and his wish to see Lord Vishnu. Narada was amazed by Dhruva’s courage. He taught Dhruva the holy mantra “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya” and how to meditate with love and focus.
Dhruva’s Penance
Dhruva sat by the bank of the Yamuna river, beneath a large, shady tree. He closed his eyes, sat very still, and chanted the mantra with all his heart. Day after day, Dhruva’s devotion grew stronger. He ate less and less, giving up food, water, and sleep, and focused only on Lord Vishnu. The forest animals watched quietly as the little prince meditated with such deep faith.
Months passed. The gods in the heavens were amazed by Dhruva’s penance, and the earth began to tremble with the power of his devotion.
Lord Vishnu Appears
Pleased with Dhruva’s dedication and pure heart, Lord Vishnu appeared before him in a brilliant form, holding a conch, discus, mace, and lotus. His eyes sparkled with love and kindness. A gentle fragrance filled the air, and soft music played as the Lord smiled at Dhruva.
Dhruva opened his eyes and was dazzled by the vision. He folded his hands and bowed in awe. At first, Dhruva could not speak, but Lord Vishnu touched his cheek with His conch, giving him the ability to praise the Lord with beautiful prayers.
Dhruva said, “O Lord, I wanted a kingdom greater than anyone else’s, but now that I see You, I realize that Your love is the greatest treasure of all.”
Lord Vishnu, deeply pleased, blessed Dhruva, saying, “You will rule a great kingdom on earth, and after your time here, you will live forever as the shining Dhruva star, a guide to all who look up at the night sky. Above all, My love will always be with you.”
Dhruva’s Return
Dhruva returned home, full of peace and wisdom. His father, mother, and even his stepmother welcomed him with love and respect. Dhruva grew up to be a noble king, ruling with kindness, fairness, and devotion to God. Even today, the Dhruva star shines in the northern sky, reminding us of his faith and determination.
Moral of the Story
Dear children, the story of Dhruva’s penance teaches us that with faith, determination, and pure devotion, we can achieve anything. The Lord listens to all who pray sincerely, no matter how young or small. The love of God is the greatest reward, and when we keep Him in our hearts, we are never alone.
