The Story of Dhruva’s Reign and Departure
From Srimad Bhagavatam Canto 4: The Creation of the Fourth Order — A Gentle Bedtime Story for Young Vaishnavs
Once Upon a Time…
After his wonderful meeting with Lord Vishnu in the forest, young Dhruva returned home full of peace and joy. His father, King Uttanapada, was so proud and happy that he made Dhruva the prince. Everyone in the kingdom celebrated, and Dhruva’s mother, Suniti, blessed him with all her heart.
Dhruva was crowned king when he was just a young boy, but he ruled with wisdom beyond his years. He remembered Lord Vishnu’s teachings and always tried to be fair, kind, and brave. Dhruva took care of his people, made sure justice was done, and encouraged everyone to love and serve the Lord.
Dhruva’s Wise Reign
As king, Dhruva built beautiful cities, gardens, and temples. He listened carefully to the needs of his people. Whenever someone was sad or in trouble, Dhruva tried his best to help them. He treated everyone like his own family, whether they were rich or poor, young or old.
Dhruva never forgot to pray each day and always set a good example of honesty, humility, and devotion. He shared the stories of Lord Vishnu with his children and all the children in the kingdom. Festivals and celebrations were held to honor God, filling the land with joy.
Facing Challenges with Faith
Even during hard times, Dhruva stayed strong. Once, an enemy king attacked the kingdom. Dhruva bravely led his army but also prayed to Lord Vishnu for guidance and strength. With courage and faith, he protected his people and restored peace.
As years passed, Dhruva had sons and grandsons who loved and respected him. He taught them to always walk on the path of dharma, to serve their people, and to keep Lord Vishnu in their hearts.
Preparing for Departure
After ruling for many, many years, Dhruva felt it was time to leave the world and return to the Lord. He knew that everything in this world is temporary and that the real goal of life is to remember God with love.
Dhruva handed the kingdom to his son, Utkala, and blessed all his family and people. Then, he walked away from the palace, wearing simple clothes and chanting the holy names of Lord Vishnu.
Dhruva traveled to a sacred forest, where he sat beneath a great tree, closed his eyes, and began to meditate on the Lord, just as he had done as a child.
The Divine Chariot
One day, as Dhruva sat in deep meditation, a dazzling golden chariot appeared in the sky. It was sent by Lord Vishnu Himself, and the chariot was driven by the beautiful attendants of the Lord, the Vishnudutas.
They invited Dhruva to step onto the chariot and come to Vaikuntha, the eternal world of Lord Vishnu. As he was about to step onto the chariot, Dhruva remembered his mother, Suniti. He did not want to go without her. By Lord Vishnu’s grace, Suniti was allowed to join Dhruva, and together they ascended to the spiritual world.
The Dhruva Star
Dhruva was given a special place among the stars—the Dhruva star (the North Star)—where he would shine forever, guiding and inspiring people for generations to come. To this day, everyone who looks up at the night sky can see the Dhruva star and remember his story of faith, courage, and devotion.
Moral of the Story
Dear children, the story of Dhruva’s reign and departure teaches us that true greatness comes from humility, kindness, and unwavering love for God. Even as we achieve success, we must always stay grateful and remember the Lord. When we do our duties with devotion, we become a shining light for others—just like Dhruva, the guiding star in the sky.
