The Story of King Anga and Vena
From Srimad Bhagavatam, Canto 4: The Creation of the Fourth Order
StoryTimeLover.com Bedtime Story Collection
Long ago, there was a gentle and noble king named Anga. He was wise, kind, and deeply devoted to the Lord. He ruled his people with fairness and love, but there was one sadness in his life—he had no child.
King Anga and his queen Sunitha prayed sincerely for a child. After many prayers and rituals, their wish was fulfilled, and a son was born. They named him Vena. But as Vena grew, his parents noticed he was different. Vena became proud, stubborn, and unkind. He ignored his parents’ teachings and did not respect elders or sages.
King Anga tried again and again to teach his son about goodness, kindness, and the importance of loving God. But Vena did not listen. He became more selfish and even started to trouble the people of the kingdom.
Seeing his son’s behavior, King Anga felt helpless and heartbroken. One night, he quietly left his palace and went into the forest to pray for guidance, leaving the kingdom without a ruler.
The kingdom soon fell into worry and confusion. The wise sages came together and thought, “Perhaps Vena will change if he is given the responsibility of ruling.” So, with hope, they made Vena the new king.
Sadly, Vena’s behavior only became worse. He grew more arrogant and harsh, even forbidding all prayers and worship of the Lord. “Only I should be worshipped!” he declared. The people became sad, and the land felt heavy with sorrow.
The sages, full of compassion, tried to guide King Vena back to the right path. They spoke to him about dharma, the importance of kindness, and the Lord’s love. But Vena would not listen. Instead, he grew angry and pushed everyone away.
Seeing there was no hope for Vena’s change, the sages joined together in prayer. With their spiritual power, they removed Vena from the throne. Then, in a special ritual, they purified the kingdom by bringing forth a noble and righteous soul—King Prithu—from Vena’s lineage.
King Prithu was the opposite of Vena. He was wise, caring, and always remembered the Lord. Under his rule, the kingdom flourished once more, and everyone felt peace and happiness again.
Moral for Young Vaishnavs:
True greatness is not in power or birth, but in kindness, humility, and devotion to God. No matter what challenges we face, we should always listen to wise advice and choose the path of love and goodness.
