The Story of How Creation Began: The Process of Creation Explained

Once Upon a Time…

After hearing many wondrous stories about Lord Vishnu and the universe, King Parikshit asked Sage Suka, “O wise one, can you please explain how the world came into being? How did creation begin?”

Sage Suka smiled and began to tell the story of creation in a way that even the youngest listener could understand.

In the Beginning: Only the Lord

Long ago, before anything existed—before the stars, the sun, the earth, or even time—there was only the Supreme Lord. He rested peacefully on the endless, silent ocean, lying upon Ananta, the great serpent, and everything was filled with stillness.

Then, from Lord Vishnu’s navel grew a beautiful golden lotus. Seated on this lotus appeared Lord Brahma, the creator, who looked around and saw only darkness and the endless ocean.

Brahma’s Search and First Prayer

Brahma wanted to know how to begin creation. He looked in all directions but could not see anything except the lotus. So, he sat down, closed his eyes, and prayed with all his heart to the Lord for guidance. After a long time of deep meditation, Lord Vishnu spoke to Brahma from within his heart.

The Lord said, “Brahma, I will give you knowledge. Use your mind and your devotion to create the world as I wish.”

Creation Begins: The First Elements

Blessed by Lord Vishnu, Brahma began his work. First, he created the five basic elements that make up everything in the universe:

  • Earth (Prithvi)

  • Water (Apah)

  • Fire (Agni)

  • Air (Vayu)

  • Space (Akasha)

These elements mixed and mingled in many ways, giving rise to all the worlds.

The Mind, Senses, and Beings

Next, Brahma created the mind and the senses, so living beings could see, hear, touch, taste, and smell. With these gifts, the universe became full of movement and life.

Then Brahma brought forth the first living beings—great sages, the four Kumaras, and powerful beings known as Prajapatis who would help fill the world with plants, animals, and people.

He also created time, day and night, and the cycle of the seasons, so that life could move and change.

The Three Modes of Nature

Suka explained, “In this world, everything is guided by three qualities, called gunas:

  • Goodness (Sattva): brings peace, clarity, and kindness

  • Passion (Rajas): brings energy, activity, and desire

  • Ignorance (Tamas): brings darkness, sleep, and confusion

The mix of these qualities in different amounts shapes everything we see and experience.”

Creation Continues

With Lord Vishnu’s blessings and knowledge, Brahma continued to create more and more. He brought forth plants and trees, mountains and rivers, animals of all kinds, birds that sing, and fish that swim. Finally, he created people, who could think, love, and remember God.

Brahma remembered to pray to the Lord before every new act of creation, knowing that he was only an instrument and the real power belonged to Vishnu.

The Lord’s Loving Guidance

Through all this, Lord Vishnu watched over the universe with love, making sure everything was balanced and full of beauty. Whenever the world became troubled or dharma was lost, the Lord would take an avatar—a special form—to protect the world and teach the people.

The Universe as the Lord’s Play

Suka finished, “Dear King, the whole creation is like a wonderful play of the Lord. He creates, preserves, and sometimes lets things rest, so that new things can begin. Everything and everyone is a part of His divine plan.”

Moral of the Story

Dear children, the story of creation reminds us that everything in this world—every person, tree, river, and star—comes from God’s love and wisdom. If we remember that the Lord is the creator and protector, we will treat the world and everyone in it with care and kindness. We are all part of a beautiful, divine family.
