The Story of Prachetas and the Birth of Daksha
From Srimad Bhagavatam Canto 4: The Creation of the Fourth Order — A Gentle Bedtime Story for Young Vaishnavs
Once Upon a Time…
Long ago, there were ten royal brothers known as the Prachetas. They were the sons of King Pracinabarhi and were destined to become the ancestors of many people on earth. The Prachetas were wise and obedient. They listened carefully to their father, who asked them to go out and prepare themselves to continue the work of creation and take care of the world.
The Prachetas’ Great Meditation
Before starting their important duty, the ten brothers wanted to please Lord Vishnu and seek His blessings. So, together, the Prachetas went to a beautiful lake and stood in its cool waters. There, they meditated deeply for thousands of years! They sang wonderful hymns and prayed to the Lord with all their hearts. The power of their prayers and the love in their hearts filled the world with a gentle peace.
Pleased with their devotion, Lord Vishnu appeared before them in a dazzling form. He smiled kindly and said, “Dear Prachetas, I am happy with your faith. Because of your devotion, you will have a wonderful son who will become famous as Daksha. He will help fill the world with good people and guide many souls on the right path.”
The brothers bowed with joy and gratitude, knowing their prayers were answered.
Clearing the Forest
When the Prachetas finished their meditation, they returned to find that the land was covered with thick forests. They needed open space for people to live and work. With the blessings of the Lord, the Prachetas used their powers to clear away just enough of the forest to make the land suitable for living—while still leaving plenty of trees for nature to flourish.
Mother Earth was pleased because the brothers cared for her and respected all living things.
The Marriage to Marisha
The Prachetas soon met a gentle and wise woman named Marisha. She was born from a beautiful Apsara (heavenly maiden) and had been blessed to become the wife of the Prachetas. Together, the brothers and Marisha prayed for a child who would bring peace and prosperity to the world.
The Birth of Daksha
In time, Marisha gave birth to a wonderful son named Daksha. He was blessed by Lord Vishnu Himself and was destined to play a very important role in creation. Daksha grew up to be wise, hardworking, and a great leader. He became one of the Prajapatis—those who help create and care for all living beings.
Daksha taught people how to live well, care for one another, and always remember God. Because of him, the world became filled with good people, wise leaders, and loving families.
The Blessing of Lord Vishnu
The Prachetas, Marisha, and Daksha never forgot to thank Lord Vishnu for His blessings. They taught everyone that devotion, respect for nature, and kindness to all are the most important values in life.
Moral of the Story
Dear children, the story of the Prachetas and Daksha teaches us that when we work together, pray with devotion, and care for nature, great blessings come our way. Always respect the earth, listen to wise guidance, and remember that God is pleased with love, unity, and selfless actions.
