The Story of Prithuâs Sacrifice
From Srimad Bhagavatam Canto 4: The Creation of the Fourth Order â A Gentle Bedtime Story for Young Vaishnavs
Once Upon a TimeâŚ
Long ago, there was a king named Prithu. He was born from the arms of King Vena, who had caused much sorrow in his kingdom. But Prithu was very different. He was kind, wise, and full of devotion to the Lord. The people welcomed him with hope, and the earth herself rejoiced, for she knew Prithu would bring goodness back to the land.
The Earth Withholds Her Gifts
When Prithu became king, he noticed that his people were suffering. Crops would not grow, rivers were shrinking, and animals were hungry. The earth, called Bhumi Devi, had hidden all her gifts out of fear of King Venaâs past cruelty.
Prithu saw his people in pain and wanted to help them. With a gentle heart, he spoke to Bhumi Devi, asking her to come forth and bless the world again. At first, she was afraid, but Prithu was patient and wise. He promised to protect her and treat her with kindness.
Seeing his pure heart, Bhumi Devi took the form of a sacred cow and allowed herself to be âmilkedâ by Prithu. From her, the earth gave food, water, and treasures once again. The people were overjoyed, and the land became lush and full of life.
Prithuâs Great Sacrifice
King Prithu wanted to thank God for all these blessings, so he decided to perform a great sacrifice called the Ashvamedha Yagna. He invited sages, priests, kings, and citizens from everywhere to join in the worship of Lord Vishnu.
Prithuâs sacrifice was specialânot just because it was grand, but because it was done with a heart full of love, gratitude, and devotion. During the yagna, Prithu prayed, âO Lord, let me always serve You and Your people. May I rule with truth and kindness, remembering You in all that I do.â
He performed ninety-nine sacrifices, each one purifying the world and bringing peace and happiness to his people. On the hundredth sacrifice, Lord Indra, king of the heavens, felt jealous and tried to interrupt the ceremony. But Prithu, wise and humble, forgave Indra and asked everyone to be peaceful. He taught that no sacrifice is greater than forgiveness and devotion.
Lord Vishnuâs Blessing
Lord Vishnu was so pleased with Prithuâs devotion that He appeared at the yagna, shining with golden light. He blessed Prithu and said, âBecause of your pure heart and service, you will be remembered as a great king. The earth will be named Prithvi in your honor.â
Prithu bowed down with tears of joy and gratitude. He ruled his kingdom for many years, always keeping the Lord in his heart and caring for all beings as his own children.
The Earthâs Gratitude
Thanks to King Prithu, the earth became green, rivers flowed freely, and everyone lived in harmony. People remembered Prithu as a just and loving ruler whose sacrifices brought the blessings of the Lord to all.
Moral of the Story
Dear children, King Prithuâs story teaches us the importance of kindness, patience, and gratitude. When we care for nature, forgive others, and serve with love, the Lordâs blessings fill our lives. True sacrifices are not just rituals, but acts of love and devotion in everyday life.
