Vidura’s Pilgrimage and Meeting with Maitreya

Once Upon a Time…

In the kingdom of Hastinapura lived a wise and gentle man named Vidura. Vidura was not only an advisor to the royal family, but he was also known for his honesty, kindness, and devotion to Lord Krishna. He loved truth above all and was never afraid to speak it, even to kings.

After the great Mahabharata war, Vidura felt a deep sorrow in his heart. He had seen so much pain and loss, and he wished to find answers to life’s deepest questions. So, Vidura decided to leave the palace and go on a pilgrimage—a holy journey to many sacred places—to seek peace, wisdom, and the company of saintly souls.

Vidura’s Pilgrimage

Vidura traveled far and wide, visiting holy rivers, forests, and temples. He met many wise sages and learned about the glories of Lord Krishna. Along his journey, Vidura served the saints, listened to their teachings, and spent many days in deep prayer and meditation.

His heart began to heal, and his mind grew peaceful, but he still felt a longing for higher knowledge. He wished to learn more about the mysteries of creation, the soul, and the Supreme Lord.

The Blessed Meeting with Maitreya

One day, Vidura heard about a great sage named Maitreya who lived on the banks of the sacred Ganga river. Maitreya was famous for his deep wisdom and devotion to Lord Vishnu. Eager to meet him, Vidura made his way to the holy river, where he found Maitreya sitting peacefully, lost in meditation.

With folded hands and respect, Vidura greeted the sage and spoke humbly, “O wise Maitreya, I have traveled far in search of truth. My heart longs to understand the secrets of the universe, the purpose of life, and the path of loving devotion to the Lord. Please bless me with your teachings.”

Maitreya opened his eyes and smiled warmly at Vidura. He recognized Vidura’s pure heart and his deep longing for spiritual wisdom. Happy to share his knowledge, Maitreya welcomed Vidura and invited him to sit beside him under the shade of a giant tree.

The Teachings of Maitreya

Over the next days, Maitreya told Vidura about the beginning of creation, the different forms of the Lord, the importance of dharma, and the path of bhakti (loving devotion). He explained how the Supreme Lord appears in many beautiful forms and how remembering and serving God brings peace to the soul.

Maitreya also spoke about the qualities of a true devotee—one who is humble, kind, patient, and always eager to serve others. He shared the glories of listening to and chanting the Lord’s holy names, and how the stories of the Lord’s pastimes can purify even the most troubled heart.

Vidura listened with rapt attention, feeling joy and peace return to his heart. He asked many questions, and Maitreya answered each one with love and wisdom.

Vidura’s Heart Is Filled

Through his meeting with Maitreya, Vidura’s heart was filled with a deep sense of satisfaction and gratitude. He realized that the highest happiness comes not from wealth or position, but from the loving remembrance of God and the company of the wise.

After his time with Maitreya, Vidura returned to Hastinapura, ready to share his new-found wisdom and serve his family with even more compassion and understanding.

Moral of the Story

Dear children, Vidura’s pilgrimage and meeting with Maitreya teach us that life’s greatest treasures are found in humility, kindness, and seeking the company of wise souls. When we listen to stories of the Lord and serve with a pure heart, our worries fade away and true joy blossoms inside us.
