84 Vaishnav Story 65 Laghu Purushottamdas Kshratiya

Long ago, in the holy city of Benares, there lived a poet named Purushottamdas. He had a sweet voice and a clever way with words. People came from near and far to hear him sing. But his songs were not about Shri Krishna. Instead, he sang about rich kings and proud people, praising their gold, palaces, and power.

One day, Shri Mahaprabhuji was sitting peacefully near the sacred Ganga River. At that moment, Purushottamdas came there to sing. He was about to praise a wealthy man named Seth Purushottam, who was one of Shri Mahaprabhuji’s dear followers.

But Seth Purushottam gently stopped him and said, “Please don’t sing about me while my guru is here. It’s not right.”

The poet replied kindly, “Don’t worry. I will sing about other kings instead.”

And so, he began his performance. His voice was beautiful, and the words flowed like the river. But after some time, Shri Mahaprabhuji softly spoke.

“Purushottamdas,” he said with love, “Why do you sing about worldly kings? Their lives are full of pride, quarrels, and mistakes. Instead, sing about Shri Krishna, the true King, who fills hearts with joy and love.”

Hearing these gentle words touched something deep in the poet’s heart. For the first time, he felt something beyond fame and riches. He folded his hands and bowed his head.

“O Shri Mahaprabhuji,” he said humbly, “From now on, I will never praise people just for their wealth or power. I want to sing only about Shri Krishna, even though I know so little about Him.”

Shri Mahaprabhuji saw that this was a special soul. With great compassion, he gave him blessings and gently put a few drops of sacred water in his mouth. In that magical moment, everything changed for Purushottamdas. It was like a light had been turned on in his heart.

From then on, he could see and feel the playful, loving leelas of Shri Krishna. He no longer cared for gold or glory. He only wanted to sing about the beauty of Shri Krishna and the kindness of Shri Mahaprabhuji, whom he saw as one and the same.

Every word he sang now came from love. His voice became even sweeter, because it was filled with truth. People still came to hear him sing, but this time, they didn’t come for kings or fame. They came to feel Shri Krishna’s love through his songs.

And that’s how Purushottamdas, once a poet for the world, became a poet for the Lord.

Poem: The Song of Love

Purushottam sang of kings and gold,
Stories of pride and riches bold.
But then he met Shri Mahaprabhuji,
By the banks of the holy Ganga, so free.

“Why sing of men,” the master said,
“When Shri Krishna’s joy can bloom instead?”
The poet bowed with teary eyes,
And gave up praise of worldly ties.

With sacred drops and heart so bright,
He saw Shri Krishna’s play and light.
Now every song was soft and true,
With Shri Mahaprabhuji guiding through.

So sing not just of palace and throne,
But of the Lord who calls us home.
A heart that loves is rich and wise,
That’s the truth no gold can disguise.
