84 Vaishnav Story 70 Kanaiyalal Kshatriya

Long ago in a small village, a baby boy named Kanaiyalal was born to very poor parents. On the very same day, something amazing happened. While working in the fields, his parents found a hidden treasure buried in the ground. They believed their son brought them great fortune and felt their lives had turned brighter.

As Kanaiyalal grew, he became a kind and thoughtful boy. But when he turned thirteen, his father passed away, leaving only his loving mother to care for him. She was so attached to her only son that she never wanted him out of her sight. But Kanaiyalal dreamed of visiting the holy city of Mathura, the land of Shri Krishna’s pastimes. He kept asking his mother for permission until, at last, she agreed to let him go with his uncle. Her only condition was that he must return home quickly.

When they reached Mathura, Kanaiyalal’s heart longed to see all the sacred places of Braj. Though his uncle hesitated at first, Kanaiyalal’s deep yearning convinced him. Together, they began their pilgrimage through the divine land. On the fifth day, they arrived at the Govardhana Hill. The moment Kanaiyalal saw the sacred hill, his heart overflowed with devotion. He felt so overwhelmed that he stopped speaking and eating. He wouldn’t even dress himself unless someone helped him. His uncle became worried and didn’t know how to bring him back home in this strange state.

For a whole month, they stayed near Govardhana, trying everything to heal Kanaiyalal. Doctors and holy men came, but no one could help. Back home, Kanaiyalal’s mother grew anxious and sent someone to find out about her son. When she heard that her beloved child had lost his senses, she rushed to Govardhana.

Seeing her son, she held him close and wept bitterly. She blamed her brother for allowing the boy to go. She tried many remedies, but Kanaiyalal remained the same. Finally, she asked the local people if there was a great saint who might help. Just then, Shri Mahaprabhuji’s disciple Sadu Pandeji arrived. Hearing her plight, he said his guru was nearby. The mother begged him to take her to Shri Mahaprabhuji.

Sadu Pandeji led her to the great saint. Seeing her sorrow, Shri Mahaprabhuji said gently, “Bring your son to me at once.”

The mother hurried back and carried Kanaiyalal to Shri Mahaprabhuji. The saint softly chanted sacred mantras and sprinkled holy water on the boy. At once, Kanaiyalal regained his senses. He bowed before Shri Mahaprabhuji and asked, “Why did you awaken me? I was lost in the sweet bliss of Shri Krishna’s lilas.”

Shri Mahaprabhuji lovingly explained, “Your heart was full of divine love, but it had grown too strong, beyond its limits. It could have drowned you. True devotion should stay steady and quiet within, unseen by the world. That is the way of deep love for Shri Krishna.”

“Please bless me with such firm love,” Kanaiyalal pleaded.

With great kindness, Shri Mahaprabhuji brought Kanaiyalal before Shri Nathji and spiritually joined his soul with Shri Krishna’s eternal play. Kanaiyalal felt the joy of Shri Krishna’s lilas fill his whole being. Shri Mahaprabhuji taught him about the path of loving devotion and blessed him, saying, “Now go home. Nothing will ever block your devotion.”

Grateful, Kanaiyalal’s mother offered one thousand rupees to Shri Mahaprabhuji and invited him to visit their home in Agra. Sometime later, Shri Mahaprabhuji stayed at their house for five days, teaching Kanaiyalal about the wonderful moods of Shri Krishna’s lilas.

Years passed, and after Shri Mahaprabhuji left this world, his son Shri Gusainji asked his mother where he could find his father’s writings. She told him to visit Kanaiyalal’s home in Agra. Shri Gusainji went there, studied the writings, and wrote commentaries on them. He also shared with Kanaiyalal beautiful teachings about Shri Krishna’s intimate lilas. Whenever Kanaiyalal tried to bow to him, Shri Gusainji would say gently, “Shri Mahaprabhuji lives within your heart.”

One day, after Kanaiyalal’s mother passed away, Shri Gusainji told him, “I am going to Dwarka.”

Kanaiyalal replied, “I will meet you there.”

“But how will you find your way? You do not speak to anyone,” Shri Gusainji asked.

“I do not need to ask anyone,” Kanaiyalal answered calmly.

Shri Gusainji went ahead. After a few days, Kanaiyalal began his journey. On the way, he got lost in a thick forest and found no water. Feeling faint, he sat under a tree reading Shri Mahaprabhuji’s writings. Suddenly, a young cowherd appeared and said, “Why are you sitting here? There are snakes and lions around.”

Kanaiyalal replied softly, “I am a disciple of Shri Mahaprabhuji. Nothing can harm me.”

The boy pointed to a nearby lake that had appeared miraculously. Kanaiyalal drank the sweet water. Soon after, another cowherd came and offered him prasada from Shri Nathji’s temple. Though Kanaiyalal was hesitant at first, the boy insisted it was truly Shri Nathji’s prasada. Kanaiyalal accepted it with respect.

Later, a third cowherd arrived and said, “Go have darshan at Shri Dwarkanathji’s temple.” When Kanaiyalal looked up, he saw the grand temple before him. Inside, he met Shri Gusainji who smiled and asked, “You spoke to no one on the way?”

“I spoke to no one, except the three cowherds,” Kanaiyalal said.

Shri Gusainji revealed, “Those cowherds were me. By Shri Mahaprabhuji’s grace, all this happened.”

Hand in hand, they went into the temple. Though it was Shri Dwarkanathji’s temple, Kanaiyalal saw Shri Nathji, as his heart was connected to the form of grace.

On the way back to Agra, Shri Gusainji asked Kanaiyalal to join him. But Kanaiyalal said gently, “You are here to uplift many souls. I prefer to travel alone.”

Again, Kanaiyalal got lost in a forest. But as he read his guru’s writings, a cowherd appeared and said, “Go bathe in the Yamuna before you continue.” When Kanaiyalal looked up, the Yamuna River and the city of Agra appeared before him. He walked home peacefully.

When Shri Gusainji reached Agra, he asked, “How long did it take you to get here?”

Kanaiyalal replied, “I do not know. You brought me to Dwarka and brought me back.”

Pleased, Shri Gusainji stayed with him for a few days before moving on.

From then on, Kanaiyalal lived a life filled with deep devotion. He carried out all his duties when he was aware of his body. But whenever he lost himself in Shri Krishna’s bliss, he became unaware of the world. His story reminds us that the lilas of Braj are beyond what anyone can fully understand.

Even great beings like Sheshji, Shivji, and Narayanji cannot measure their sweetness.

Poem: The Blissful Heart of Kanaiyalal

Kanaiyalal’s heart was pure and bright, He saw Govardhan and lost to delight. Shri Mahaprabhuji brought him back with care, Teaching love so strong yet hidden from stare.

He walked with faith through forest deep, Where grace and Krishna their promises keep. Even when lost, the Lord showed the way, To Dwarka’s temple and home one day.

The moral shines soft, like the moon above, True devotion is quiet, deep, and full of love.
