In the city of Prayag, a baby boy was born into a wealthy Kshatriya family. His name was Dinkardasji. From the time he was very young, his heart was full of love for Shri Krishna and stories about His greatness. Whenever someone came to give a spiritual talk, little Dinkardasji would sneak away from his home just to hear about the Lord.
But Dinkardasji didn’t stop there. He wanted to give something to those who spoke about Shri Krishna. So, he would quietly take cloth and other items from his house and give them as gifts to the speakers. His family thought he was stealing and were very upset with him. They didn’t understand his deep love. But the spiritual speakers respected him and smiled kindly at him.
One day, when Dinkardasji’s elder brother was getting married, the house was full of joy and preparations. Fancy new clothes and shiny jewelry were ready for the groom. But Dinkardasji saw these and thought of the devotees. Quietly, he took everything and shared it with ten religious speakers. When he came back, his father was furious. He punished Dinkardasji and locked him in a room for three days. Still, the young boy’s love for Shri Krishna never faded.
Time passed, and his parents passed away. Dinkardasji was not close to his brothers and decided to leave Prayag. Before going, he bathed at the holy spot where Shri Ganga and Shri Yamuna meet. There he met a kind man named Krishnadas Meghan. Dinkardasji asked him, “Do you know where I can hear talks about Shri Krishna?”
Krishnadas Meghan smiled and said, “Come with me to Adel. Shri Mahaprabhuji is speaking there.”
They crossed the river and went to Adel together. When they reached, Dinkardasji bowed down before Shri Mahaprabhuji. Shri Mahaprabhuji looked at him and gently said, “Dinkardasji, sit down and listen.”
As Dinkardasji listened to Shri Mahaprabhuji talk about the playful and divine pastimes of Shri Krishna and the Gopis, tears filled his eyes. His heart overflowed with joy. “I want to become his disciple and listen to him forever,” he thought.
Later, he prayed to Shri Mahaprabhuji, “Please accept me as your disciple.”
Shri Mahaprabhuji asked kindly, “You have heard many speakers before. Why didn’t you become their disciple?”
Dinkardasji replied honestly, “They were only interested in money. Now that I am poor, they don’t even talk to me.”
Hearing this, Shri Mahaprabhuji gave him a special mantra and said, “Do Shri Krishna’s seva.”
With folded hands and love in his heart, Dinkardasji replied, “For me, real seva is listening to your divine words.”
Shri Mahaprabhuji smiled and said, “Then you may stay with me.”
From that day, Dinkardasji stayed in Adel. Every day, he listened to Shri Mahaprabhuji and was filled with peace and devotion. One day, after taking his bath in Shri Yamunaji, he started preparing dough to make bread. Suddenly, a young water carrier came by. Dinkardasji quickly asked, “What is Shri Mahaprabhuji doing?”
The boy said, “He’s about to begin his talk!”
Dinkardasji didn’t want to miss even a word. In his hurry, he didn’t wait to cook the dough. He simply ate the raw dough and ran to the discourse.
After the talk, the young boy told Shri Mahaprabhuji what had happened. Shri Mahaprabhuji later asked Dinkardasji, “Why did you eat raw dough?”
With great love, Dinkardasji answered, “I eat cooked bread every day. But your words are sweeter than any food. I didn’t want to miss even one word of your speech.”
Shri Mahaprabhuji gently smiled and said, “From today, finish your cooking early. I will wait to start until you come. You are my main listener.”
Dinkardasji spent the rest of his life near Shri Mahaprabhuji, always eager to hear more about Shri Krishna. His heart remained full of devotion, and his ears never tired of listening to divine stories.
