The Story of Ajamila and the Power of the Holy Name

Once Upon a Time…

There once lived a young man named Ajamila. In his youth, Ajamila was kind, gentle, and full of good habits. He respected his parents, served the sages, and loved chanting the holy names of Lord Vishnu. His heart was pure and his life was filled with happiness.

But as time went on, Ajamila made some mistakes. One day, while collecting flowers in the forest, he saw people making wrong choices. Temptation led him away from his family, and he slowly forgot his good habits and devotion. Ajamila married a woman who did not follow the right path, and soon, his life was filled with worries, selfish actions, and unkindness. He stopped chanting the Lord’s name and forgot the peaceful life he once knew.

Ajamila’s Last Day

Many years passed. Ajamila grew old. He had sons, and his youngest boy was named Narayana—a name of Lord Vishnu. Ajamila loved this little boy dearly and called out “Narayana! Narayana!” every day to care for him.

One day, as Ajamila lay sick on his bed, he knew his end was near. He saw three fierce messengers of Yama, the lord of death, coming to take his soul away. Afraid and helpless, Ajamila called out loudly, “Narayana! Narayana!” hoping to see his beloved son one last time.

The Miracle of the Holy Name

But the holy name of the Lord is more powerful than anyone can imagine. The moment Ajamila called out “Narayana,” four beautiful, glowing messengers appeared—the Vishnudutas, servants of Lord Vishnu. They shone with kindness and protected Ajamila from the fearsome Yamadutas.

The Yamadutas argued, “Ajamila has done many wrong things in life. He must come with us!” But the Vishnudutas replied, “Even once, if someone chants the holy name of the Lord with sincerity, it can wash away lifetimes of mistakes. Ajamila has just called out ‘Narayana,’ and that holy name has saved him.”

Ajamila’s Awakening

Ajamila was surprised to see what had happened. He understood the mercy of the Lord and the power of chanting the holy name, even if by accident or at the last moment. His heart filled with regret for the life he had wasted, but also with deep gratitude for the Lord’s forgiveness.

Ajamila decided to change his ways. He left his home, went to the holy city of Haridwar, and spent the rest of his days chanting the names of the Lord with true devotion. Ajamila’s heart became pure once again, and when his time came, he went to the spiritual world, blessed by the Lord Himself.

The Power of the Holy Name

This story teaches us that the Lord’s name is full of mercy, love, and light. No matter how many mistakes we make, if we chant the holy names with a sincere heart, the Lord always forgives and protects us. The name “Narayana”—and any of God’s names—are like a key that unlocks the Lord’s kindness.

Moral of the Story

Dear children, never forget the power of chanting God’s holy names. Even if you make mistakes, remember that the Lord is always ready to forgive. Keep the Lord’s name on your lips and in your heart every day, and He will guide, protect, and love you always.
