The Story of Chitraketu and the Death of His Son

Long ago, in the peaceful kingdom of Shurasena, there lived a kind and noble king named Chitraketu. King Chitraketu ruled with wisdom and love, but his heart was full of sorrow because he and his many queens had no children. He longed for a son to love, care for, and one day continue his good work as king.

Day after day, King Chitraketu prayed to the Lord for a child. His queens also prayed and wished for a son, hoping to bring happiness to their beloved king. One day, the great sage Angira visited the palace. He saw the king’s sadness and asked, “O King, why do you look so troubled?”

Chitraketu bowed and shared his heart’s pain. “O wise sage, I have everything a king could wish for, but without a child, my life feels empty.” Sage Angira smiled gently and blessed Chitraketu, promising that soon he would have a son.

True to the sage’s word, not long after, Chitraketu’s chief queen, Kritadyuti, gave birth to a beautiful baby boy. The whole palace was filled with joy! King Chitraketu was overjoyed and thanked the Lord for His mercy. But this happiness did not last for long.

The other queens grew jealous because only the chief queen had a son. Their hearts filled with envy, and they could not bear to see Kritadyuti and the king so happy. In their sadness, they made a terrible choice—they poisoned the little prince.

When the king and Kritadyuti discovered their son had died, their world shattered. Kritadyuti wept, holding her lifeless child, and King Chitraketu’s heart broke. All the people of the kingdom mourned, for the young prince was loved by everyone.

Seeing their suffering, Sage Angira returned, this time with the powerful sage Narada. With gentle voices, they tried to comfort the king and queen, reminding them that life and death are part of this world, and that our real identity is not the body but the eternal soul.

Narada performed a wondrous act. By his spiritual power, he called the soul of the prince back to his body. The little prince awoke and spoke, “Who are my father and mother? In my many lifetimes, I have had so many parents. Now I must continue my journey as the soul that I am. Please do not cry for me.” With these wise words, the prince’s soul left the body again.

King Chitraketu and Kritadyuti realized a great truth. They understood that while love for family is precious, everyone belongs to God and is on their own spiritual path. This wisdom calmed their grief, and they felt peace return to their hearts. King Chitraketu spent his days in devotion, spreading kindness and learning the secrets of true happiness from sages like Narada.

Through his deep sorrow, King Chitraketu became one of the greatest devotees, always remembering the Lord and sharing love and wisdom with all.
