Long ago, in the heavenly realms, the king of the gods, Indra, faced great trouble. Bali, the powerful king of the demons (Asuras), had defeated Indra and taken away the kingdom of heaven. The gods were sad, and the world was out of balance. But as always, Lord Vishnu was watching and planning to help.
Indra’s mother, Aditi, prayed to Lord Vishnu for help. Pleased by her devotion, the Lord appeared before her and promised to become her son and restore peace to the world. In time, Aditi gave birth to a wonderful little boy with eyes shining like the sun. This was Lord Vishnu Himself, appearing as the charming dwarf brahmana, Vamana.
As Vamana grew, everyone could see His divine glow and gentle wisdom. One day, King Bali was performing a great sacrifice and giving gifts to everyone. The gods, disguised as brahmanas, were there too, waiting and watching.
Vamana, dressed as a simple brahmana boy, walked into the assembly with a soft smile. His presence filled the place with wonder and peace. All the sages and kings rose to greet Him, and King Bali offered water to wash His feet, then asked, “Dear child, what can I give you? I am happy to fulfill any wish you have.”
Vamana replied humbly, “O king, I ask for only three steps of land, measured by my small feet. That is enough for me.”
King Bali was surprised, “You ask for so little, though I am able to give much more! Are you sure?” But Vamana only smiled and nodded.
Shukracharya, Bali’s guru, warned him, “This is no ordinary boy! He is Lord Vishnu. Be careful before you promise.” But Bali, true to his word and full of faith, said, “If this is the Lord, I am honored to give Him what He asks, even if I lose everything.”
King Bali poured water to seal his promise. Instantly, Vamana began to grow! He grew and grew, becoming so huge that He reached the sky. With His first step, Vamana covered the earth and all its lands. With His second step, He stretched out His foot and covered the heavens, taking back the kingdom of the gods. There was nowhere left for a third step.
Vamana turned to Bali, “O king, you promised Me three steps. Where shall I place My third?”
Bali bowed his head and replied, “O Lord, I have nothing left. Place Your foot on my head.”
Lord Vamana smiled and gently placed His foot on Bali’s head, blessing him forever. Because of Bali’s faith and truthfulness, the Lord made him king of the underworld and promised that one day, Bali would be king of the heavens too.
Indra and the gods rejoiced as their home was returned to them. Peace and happiness came back to the world. Lord Vishnu had protected His devotee and shown the power of faith and surrender.
Moral for Young Vaishnavs:
When we give with a pure heart, keep our promises, and trust in the Lord, He always takes care of us. True greatness is not in power, but in faith, humility, and love for God.
