The Story of Dhruva Maharaja
From Srimad Bhagavatam Canto 3: The Status Quo — A Gentle Bedtime Story for Young Vaishnavs
Once Upon a Time…
In a grand kingdom long ago lived a young prince named Dhruva. He was the son of King Uttanapada and his gentle mother, Queen Suniti. Although Dhruva was a prince, he did not always feel happy. His father had another queen, Suruchi, who was proud and favored her own son, Uttama, over Dhruva.
One day, little Dhruva saw his stepbrother sitting on their father's lap. Dhruva wanted to do the same, so he hurried to his father. But Queen Suruchi stopped him. “You cannot sit on the king’s lap,” she said sharply, “only my son can do that! If you wish for such a blessing, you must pray to Lord Vishnu and be born to me in your next life.”
Dhruva’s heart broke. Tears filled his eyes, and he ran to his mother, Queen Suniti. She comforted him and said, “My dear child, do not be sad. If you truly wish for something, pray to Lord Vishnu with all your heart. He is the protector of everyone, and only He can fulfill your wishes.”
Dhruva’s Great Determination
Dhruva, though only five years old, was filled with courage and faith. He left the palace and went deep into the peaceful forest. There, alone among the trees and birds, he decided to meditate on Lord Vishnu.
Dhruva’s determination amazed even the forest animals and the wise sages who watched over him. He chanted the holy names of the Lord, fasted, and prayed with unwavering focus. As the days and months passed, Dhruva grew thinner, but his mind became stronger and his heart glowed with devotion.
Lord Vishnu Appears
The Supreme Lord Vishnu was deeply moved by Dhruva’s sincere prayers. He appeared before Dhruva in a glorious form, shining brighter than the sun, holding a conch, discus, mace, and lotus.
Dhruva opened his eyes and was filled with awe. He bowed down to the Lord with folded hands. “My dear Lord,” Dhruva said, “I wanted a kingdom greater than my father’s, but now, after seeing You, I only wish for Your love and blessings.”
Lord Vishnu smiled and placed His gentle hand on Dhruva’s head. “You will be blessed, dear Dhruva,” He said. “You will rule a great kingdom and, after this life, live forever as the bright star in the sky that everyone can see. But above all, you will have My love, which is the greatest gift of all.”
Dhruva’s Return and Reign
Dhruva returned home, shining with a new peace and wisdom. His father, mother, and even Queen Suruchi welcomed him with love and respect. Dhruva forgave everyone, showing kindness to all.
He grew up to become a just and noble king, ruling with fairness, compassion, and devotion to God. In the end, Dhruva was granted a special place in the sky—the Dhruva star (the North Star)—as an eternal reminder of his faith and determination.
Moral of the Story
Dear children, Dhruva Maharaja’s story shows us that with strong faith, courage, and sincere devotion, we can overcome any challenge. If you pray with love and never give up, the Lord will always hear you and guide you to what is truly best. Always remember: God’s love is greater than any worldly reward.
